It has happened to all of us. It’s 6pm, you’re just about to eat dinner, and you realized you are a little parched. Wait, no, you’re thirsty. Like really thirsty. And then you realize, you haven’t had a sip of water all day! Don’t worry, everyone has those days, but water is actually really important. And in addition to the obvious benefits – like, you know, living – water may do some things for you that you aren’t even aware of. So, if you have ever asked “does water help you lose weight?” then keep reading to find out!
So, drinking enough water is actually a lot more important than you may have realized. The American Council on Exercise recommends that active women drink about 91 ounces – that’s 2.7 liters! – per day. An easy little trick to find out if you are drinking enough water is to weigh yourself before and after your workout. If you weight two or more percent less than your before weight, you aren’t drinking enough!
Drinking water boosts your metabolism, and can increase your calorie burn up to about 200 calories! This is because your body needs to take a moment to process the water that you are taking in. So the more water you drink, the more your body has to work, and the more calories you can burn!
Another added perk to water is that it can help you figure out whether or not you are hungry! A lot of the time, when you think you are hungry, you are actually just thirsty. So the next time a little bit of hunger kicks in, try having a class of water first to figure out how hungry you actually are.
Sometimes what could be making you tired is dehydration, too. If you are feeling a little sluggish, drink some water before you head out for an iced coffee. It may just give you the pick me up that you need.
So, does water help you lose weight? Yes, yes it does! So whether you need a cute new water bottle or a few slices of lemon to motivate you, get sipping. You won’t regret it!
