Before I delve into my eye opening personal experience with the power of yoga, let me give you a little background on myself. I was NOT the type of person that would be found in the gym, EVER! I never understood why people worked out all the time. Like what’s fun about going to the gym and getting sweaty and having other people watch you work out? None of that appealed to me. Until I found yoga.
I had heard of yoga before, but I always thought it was stupid and pointless. Yoga, really? That’s not exercise! But boy was I wrong. It is exercise…it’s more than exercise, it’s a workout for the body, mind AND soul! Many people don’t realize the power of yoga; it builds muscle and tones your body. I had no idea it was possible to get sore from doing it, but believe me, it is. For the most part, it is a lot of stretching and loosening up the tight areas of your body. However, it simultaneously works the major muscles in your body, toning and defining along the way.
I began my yoga journey when I found this website called doyouyoga.com. I enrolled in one of their free trial classes, and after I finished completing the 30 day trial, I could see a huge difference in the way my body felt. I actually started looking forward to “working out,” counting down the hours til I could go to yoga class. It quickly turned into my favorite part of the day; I had wholeheartedly fallen in love with it.
Now I do yoga whenever I can – it’s unbelievable how relaxed it makes me. On days when I don’t have enough time to do it, I notice how much I truly rely on it to loosen up the tension I’ve built up throughout the day.
Throughout my whole yoga experience I have found that it is a great stress reliever. Any time I feel stressed about school or work (or anything really), it helps me relieve that stress, and really focus on what’s important. A way to instantly wash your stress away? How could you not fall in love with yoga?
What people don’t realize is that you don’t have to be a master at it to benefit from it. The whole point of yoga is to be at one with your body and mind. I recommend that everyone- no matter your body type, fitness level, or desire to exercise – try it. If you open your eyes to new experiences, like I did, you might find something you love. Namaste.
