The 10 Most Anticipated Films Releasing This Year

As we’re halfway into 2019, there are a number of anticipated films coming to theatres in the rest of the year, especially as we’re in the midst of the summer blockbuster season and not yet to the November-December movie release rush.

To ensure you don’t miss a major film while it’s in theatres, these are the 10 most anticipated films releasing later this year.

1. Toy Story 4

The next Toy Story film has been 9 years in the making, so it goes without saying it is one of the most anticipated films of 2019. Toy Story 4 is set to release 21 June 2019 in the UK and features Keanu Reeves as new character Duke Caboom.

The film follows the gang of toys as a new toy called “Forky,” a spork that becomes one of Bonnie’s new toys, joins them on a road trip with Bonnie’s family and they all learn about the endless opportunities for them as toys.

2. Spider-Man: Far From Home

Following Spider-Man: Homecoming as the next in the MARVEL series with Tom Holland as the lead, Spider-Man: Far From Home will be released on 2 July 2019 in the UK. The film is set post-Avengers: Endgame and follows Peter Parker as he works to navigate the new threats in his changed world.

It also features Jake Gyllenhaal as Quentin Beck and Mysterio, and the film is sure to rise to its expectations as the first MARVEL film following Avengers: Endgame.

3. The Lion King

Following the Disney trend of turning old animated films into live-action remakes, The Lion King live-action film will release 19 July 2019 in the UK. The film follows the same premise of the original but features celebrity actors voicing the animals, including Seth Rogen, Donald Glover, Keegan-Michael Key, and Beyoncé.

It’s a mix of live-action and CGI, and one of the most anticipated films from Disney this year. We’re sure it will make big bucks at the box office, so don’t miss out!

4. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

One of the only anticipated films on this list that isn’t a sequel or in a series, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood already has critics buzzing because of its cast list: it stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Margot Robbie, and Brad Pitt, and it’s directed by Quentin Tarantino.

The film is set in 1969 Los Angeles and follows DiCaprio as a TV star and Brad Pitt as his stunt double, set to stand as a tribute to Hollywood’s golden age. People are already gearing up for its release — 14 August 2019 in the UK — so definitely check out the trailer and see if you agree with the hype.

5. It: Chapter Two

After making $700 million at the box office, historic for a thriller film, Stephen King’s It returns to British theatres on 6 September 2019 for It: Chapter Two. The sequel is set 27 years after the first film when the Losers Club first meets Pennywise, and they reunite to take him down. It stars Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, and Bill Hader as adult versions of the kids in the first film, and it’s set to be just as scary as its predecessor.

6. Downton Abbey

By far one of the most anticipated films for television lovers, the Downtown Abbey film adaptation is coming to theatres on 20 September 2019 in the UK. Favourites from the TV series will be returning for the film, including Maggie Smith, Michelle Dockery, Hugh Bonneville, and Joanne Froggatt. The movie will be set in 1927, a year after the TV series’ finale, and is said to centre around a royal visit from King George V and Queen Mary. If you enjoyed the TV version, you certainly won’t want to miss this film.

7. Joker

After the disappointing comeback of the Joker with Jared Leto in Suicide Squad, fans are looking forward to this adaptation with Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role — one of the most anticipated films from DC comics in recent years. The trailer depicts the film as a prequel to the Joker, with Phoenix playing failed comedian Arthur Fleck who turns into the Joker mastermind after being cast out by the society of Gotham City and descending into madness. It’s set for release on 4 October 2019 in the UK.

8. Zombieland: Double Tap

We don’t know a lot about the Zombieland sequel other than that we’ve been waiting 10 years for another film, but Zombieland: Double Tap will see the return of the original actors — Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin, Jesse Eisenberg, and Woody Harrelson — as well as Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd playing themselves. It will follow the gang as they face off against more zombies and meet other survivors, and it releases on 11 October 2019 in the UK. The trailer hasn’t been released yet, so definitely stay tuned for it and don’t miss one of the most anticipated films of the year.

9. Frozen 2

After the success of the first film and its Broadway adaptation, Disney fans would say that Frozen 2 is one of the most anticipated Disney films releasing this year. The trailer depicts Elsa and Anna venturing outside of their kingdom of Arendelle as Elsa learns more about her powers and the danger that accompanies them. It looks like Elsa will appear more in the sequel than she did in the original film, and Disney has definitely turned up the intensity of the storyline, so this is definitely not a film to miss this year.

10. Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker

The final film in the new Star Wars trilogy, Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker has been one of the most anticipated Disney films since the trilogy was announced years ago. The film also raises intrigue because of Carrie Fisher’s death in 2016, and fans are wondering how they will still feature Princess Leia in the final film.

The released storyline is that what’s left of the Resistance will face off against the First Order, but most other details are unclear due to the secrecy of the script by the creators and actors. However, we do know it will release on 19 December 2019 in the UK, so be sure to buy tickets early so you don’t miss out.
