8 (Some What) Productive Snow Day Activities

Mother Nature has decided to bless you with a sweet, sweet gift: a snow day. You have a clear schedule and a pretty valid reason to literally not move from your bed for an entire day. As tempting as hours of Netflix and room temperature hot cocoa sound, maybe spending the day doing (somewhat) productive activities will actually feel really fulfilling. Imagine waking up the morning after a snow day well rested, clear-headed, and—dare I say—feeling even better than you did the day before. Here are some great snow day activities to give a try!

1. Home Yoga

Pull up a YouTube yogi video on your laptop or tablet, find some open space, and work on your downward dog at home! My favorite accounts are Yoga with Adriene and Yoga with Tim. Some types of yoga can actually be pretty grueling while others are more laid back. No matter what, it’ll be a really refreshing way to start your day!

2. Self Care Day

Devote some time to taking care of yourself. And no, that doesn’t mean lying in bed and scrolling through Instagram until you fall back asleep at noon. I mean throw on a facemask, some whitening strips, and soak in the bath with a good book! Follow it up with a mani pedi and you’ll feel like a new woman. If you’re looking to take relaxation to the next level (or momentarily calm your perpetual anxiety at the very least) you could even give meditation a try. The Headspace app is a great place to start and one of the best snow day activities for sure!

3. Clean Out Your Closet

You’ve been dreaming of it—so just pull the trigger! You don’t need those old high school sweatshirts and ancient concert tees. Divide all the clothes you haven’t worn in the past year into two piles: “sell” and “donate”. It’ll be cathartic and refreshing—not to mention, selling a few items will take some guilt out of your next shopping trip.

4. Write A Letter To Your Future Self

What are the three things you can’t stop talking about? Where do you plan to be in two years? Or five? Or even 15? What are some of your values and beliefs? What do you expect to change over the next few years? Put it all down on paper, add a sprinkle of self-love, date it, and stash it away for Future You to read

5. Prep Some Healthy Meals

Something about snow days makes me crave sugar and carbs…really bad. Even for a normally healthy eater, a few inches of snow can leave you craving pancakes, hot chocolate, Goldfish crackers and anything covered in cheese. Don’t let yourself succumb to the cravings and instead try prepping some healthy meals for that day and the rest of the week. You’ll thank me later.

6. Adult Coloring Book

Before you write this one off, hear me out. Coloring books are a great way to quiet anxiety, reduce stress and calm all that overwhelming day-to-day mind chatter. Turn on a juicy podcast or some of your favorite music and dive in, because this is definitely one of the best snow day activities.

7. Do A Pinterest DIY Project You’ve Had Saved For Months

Finally start that bullet journal you’ve been putting off or put together a mini succulent garden on your windowsill. Once you’ve finished, go ahead and treat yourself to a couple hours of laziness—you deserve it!

8. Avoid Regular Work Or School Work

Snow days are nature’s way of giving your mental health a break for 24 short hours. Don’t you dare squander it by doing the same crap you’d do any other day! This is one of the best snow day activities. Period.

Sam is, first and foremost, a dog person. She majored in Communications at Ramapo College which is probably why her talents are limited to creating mildly humorous Instagram captions, knowing just enough about movies to get by in a technical discussion without sounding like a total idiot and writing 10-page papers about Leslie Knope’s role in the feminist evolution of mainstream television. If Sam isn’t laying in bed and typing some nonsense on her laptop, she’s probably out hiking, at the gym, mindlessly scrolling through Instagram (and hating herself for it), playing with dogs that don’t belong to her, or searching Pinterest for dairy-free versions of her favorite foods.
