Do It Yourself

15 Dorm Room DIYs To Make Your Room Unique

If you’re bored of a traditional dorm room, DIY is the way to go. You can make just about anything yourself, and a personalized decoration is a perfect way to make your dorm room unique. Here are 10 dorm room DIY ideas for your dorm room.

1. Homemade Tapestry

Skip the traditional tapestry from Amazon and pick up a white bed sheet and some paint. You can choose any design you want, and you will be able to tell everyone that you made it yourself!

2. Corkboard

Every college student needs a corkboard, so you may as well DIY your own. You can cover it with fabric, leave it as cork, create a combination of both and make them just about any shape you can think of. It’s cheaper, and you won’t have to hunt around for the colors to match your room.

3. Picture Wall

One of the best ways to decorate your dorm room is with pictures of your family and friends back home. Instead of buying photo frames, hang them on an empty wall above your bed in a creative manner. This DIY is cheap, easy to do and make your room look uniquely you!

4. Coffee Mug Holder

If you don’t already rely on coffee, you will. Spice up your dorm room with this adorable DIY “cup of joe” holder. It will not only be a cute addition to the side of your desk or wardrobe, but it will also maximize what little drawer space you have.

5. Door Hanger

If you’ve made some friends on your floor that like to knock on your door at inopportune times, this door wheel is perfect for you! Hanging this outside will let everyone on your floor know where you are. This could even help with issues regarding your roommate. Switch the spinner to “sleep” and hopefully she will come in quietly.

6. Paint Swatch Calendar

The best part about this DIY? It’s practically free! You can pick up paint swatches of every color for free at your local Home Depot or WalMart. Glue the paint chips onto a cardstock sheet and insert into a painted frame to make a dry erase calendar.

7. Crate Ottoman

This DIY is for the more advanced crafter. You can pick up a crate and any fabric you want at any craft store, and a piece of plywood from a hardware store. I would suggest getting a nice foam pillow to use as your seat.

8. Magnetic Makeup Board

We all know that there is not nearly enough space to keep all of your beauty products in your door room efficiently. This magnetic makeup board is super easy to make and will help you keep track of everything you own. To DIY this board, you can either buy a magnetic board or invest in some magnetic paint.

9. K-Cup Lights

Twinkle lights are a dorm room staple, but these K-cup lights will make yours unique. Keep and wash out your old K-cups for a while leading up to crafting day and you should have enough to decorate for your new lights.

10. Dry Erase Board

This DIY dry erase board is perfect for writing notes to both yourself and your roommate. Making it is as easy as some scrabble letters, loose leaf and a cheap frame from Target.

11. Letter Decor

You can always use more letters in your room, and paper mache ones are cheap and easy to find. Decorate this letter or as many letters as you want in your own personal way to make it unique to you. You can use glitter, sequins, your own pictures or just about anything available to you.

12. Drawer Organizers

This is a DIY no one will see but it’s extremely useful for organization purposes. Using old cardboard, cut it into sections that will fit garments like bras and underwear. This will help you get as much space out of those teeny tiny dorm drawers as possible.

13. Change Jar

This charge jar can be your midnight food funds, or at least that’s what I would use it for. Any spare change you and your roomie come across can be put in this jar to use for future Taco Bell runs.

14. T-shirt Quilt

As a memoir to your pre-college life, get your old t-shirts made into a quilt. This DIY will be unique to you and only you, more so than any other DIY on this list. Most likely you won’t be wearing these t-shirts in college (at least you shouldn’t) so you may as well create a usable quilt out of them.

15. Goal List

College can get stressful, so this goal list is the perfect way to hold yourself accountable throughout the semester. Either make this a dry erase board or use the stickiness of Post-Its to fill in your weekly or monthly goals.
