While not everyone does it, some of us know the struggles that come with getting back together with your ex. I’m sure that you’ve heard how bad of an idea it is to get back together with your ex, how the relationship is doomed to fail, that you just aren’t letting go, or you’re making a mistake – but that’s not always the case. When it comes to getting back with your ex, there are some pretty crucial things you need to know if you want a shot at making it work.
1. Jumping Back In Too Quickly After Your Split Probably Isn’t the Best Idea
When you break up, it’s obviously for a reason. Unless you want a repeat of what happened that caused the split, you might want to take some time apart. If you both seriously want to make things work, you’ll both see that by taking some time apart to reflect and figure out what went wrong is a good thing.
2. The Problems You Had Before Are Likely to Arise Again
No matter how much time you take to figure things out, you both are basically the same people you were before, so you need to be prepared to either work on those things that caused problems before, or accept them without a complaint. People don’t change overnight; oftentimes it takes a while for anyone to break a habit. So if you aren’t ready to work on the things and change in order to work things out, you may be better off staying broken up.
3. You Need to Be Friends First
If you want to get back together with your ex, you might need to take a step back. Try being friends for a while. See how you can get along with each other without the romantic relationship pressure. I think this is one of the most important things you can do if you really want to build a solid foundation with your ex so when you’re officially getting back together, it works. You’ll learn more about each other, grow a deeper sense of respect for one another, and strengthen your connection.
4. Just Because You Got Back Together Doesn’t Mean Your Friends and Family Are On Board
One of the most difficult things about getting back together with your ex is how your friends and family will react. Some of you will get lucky and have the full support of your friends and family, but others of you won’t be so fortunate. Just because you can forgive and move past the negative things that happened because of your love for your ex (or not so ex if you’re back together). You need to be prepared to handle this potential obstacle.
5. If You Want Your Ex to Right Their Wrongs, You Have To, Too
When it comes to relationships, it takes two; when it comes to breaking up, it takes two. This means that in order for getting back together with your ex to actually work out, you both have to admit your wrongdoings and both work to change. You can’t expect things to work if you don’t change, and you can’t expect things to work if your ex doesn’t work to change. You both have to put in the work to make it work.
