How To Have And Maintain A Healthy Relationship

Being in a relationship can be hard, but making sure it is as healthy as possible is what is most important.

It can take a lot of effort to find the right person to be in a relationship with. When you can finally find the right person it can be magical, but it is not all happily ever after like the story books would have you believe. Even the best relationships take time and effort to get right. There are are six key tools you need in order to have and maintain a healthy relationship.

Accountability

Sharing your life with another person means that you needs to own up to your actions at all times and be prepared for any consequences that come along with them. If you are going to be in a relationship you can defend your actions and reasoning to death, but you need to be able to admit when you’ve made a mistake or have done something wrong. On the other side of it you need to be able to accept your partner’s behaviors, attitudes, and values. If they are just an all around bad person, than yeah, no excuses, but if they are just being who they are you need to just get with the program or move on to someone that is a better fit.

Safety

Now safety doesn’t just mean not being in a relationship with someone who physically harms you. It also extends to refusing to be intimidated or manipulated by another person, no matter how small something might be. You should always feel safe in a relationship emotionally and physically. That means being with someone who respects your space when you need it as well as being about to communicate with each other in a way that doesn’t lead to a shouting match every time something goes wrong. If you are in a healthy relationship you should always feel your safest with the person you love.

Honesty

This one should really be a given, but we are going to talk about it anyway. Being in a healthy relationship means being about to communicate openly and truthfully. There should never be anything you can’t discuss with your partner. Sure there will be days that were just the worst and you don’t want to talk about it, but nothing should be a danger zone topic between the two of you.

Trust

Obviously what is at the top of the relationship success list is trust, because not to sound cliche but if you don’t have trust than your relationship is doomed to failed. This means accepting each others words and giving the benefit of the doubt to your partner no matter what. If you have the type of relationship where you don’t trust the person until after a full sweep of the person’s phone than you don’t have trust.

Cooperation

Being in a relationship means that you are apart of a team, a very special team where you get to take each others pants off. Being on the relationship team means you need to start asking for the what you need not expecting it. As much as we would all like our partners to be mind readers they’re not, so tell them what you want instead of making a stink about the little tasks they don’t think to do on their own. Having a healthy relationship with good cooperation means making good decisions together. This doesn’t mean that the two of you do what you want every time. You need to be willing to compromise. Chances are there is always a win win solution that will make you both happy.

Support

I think support each others choices can be one of the most important keys to having a good relationship. Are you going to want to be with someone who think you can’t do anything you set your mind to? I don’t think so. Be understanding with the one you love, even when you really don’t and always offer them your encouragement. When you’re in a relationship you value the others opinion above everyone else’s so don’t squander it by putting them down when they need you the most.

There is of course a lot more that goes into having and maintaining a healthy relationship, but these are all the tools you need to lay a solid foundation. If you have to try to convince yourself that you do have any of these than you might actually not and might need to move on from your current love. You’re not a horrible person if you do, you should never settle for anything less when it comes to who you spend forever with.
