What It Is Like to Be The Girl That is Going Out of State

mm
Living in a small town your whole life makes going out of state for school really hard, but super exciting. This is what it is like to be the girl who left!

After being born and raised in a small town in MI, I knew going out of state was something I wanted to do for the next 4(+) years. It was simple; the mountains were calling and I must go. Every opportunity seemed to be somewhere outside of the Mitten. And that was WVU for me. It’s not always easy, but this is what it’s like to be the girl that is going out of state.

1. Constantly being asked why you decided to go so far away

This could be taken as an annoyance to some people, but for others not necessarily. Certain individuals ask this question in a passive aggressive way, but it’s just all the reason to shoot their doubts down and prove to them why it’s so great to be a Mountaineer! Honestly, anytime I get to talk about WVU it’s a reassuring excitement for what is to come in the fall!

2. Hidden fear

Behind all of the excitement, there is a substantial amount of fear. Much to where no one wants to admit. Going out of state proves an immense amount of independence that not many people have at this day in age. Having to withhold many responsibilities doesn’t leave a ton of room to show you’re scared to be on your own. But yes (mom and dad), as much as I am excited, I hold a great amount of fear.

3. The excitement that rushes through your veins when you meet someone from your home state

One of the greatest attributes about WV is that 51% of their undergrads are from out of state. Out of that 51%, you’re destined to find someone from your home state! Anytime you introduce yourself and learn someone has the same roots as you, the comforting feeling of “home away from home” rushes through you. Just from meeting people over social media and attending orientation I have found 10 people to carpool home with!

4. Blessed by Pepperoni Rolls

Thank you, mountaineer gods for blessing the wonderful state of West Virginia and for exposing me to Pepperoni Rolls. That’s all I gotta say.

5. Not seeing your hometown friends until fall break or later

It’s crazy to think about being away from my closest friends for 3 months+. I mean yeah, we have Facetime, but it’s so not the same. For 4 years you got to see these people just about every day and now you have to somehow survive without having them by your side 24/7. The week off for Thanksgiving is a blessing and a curse. The majority of schools don’t get a full week break. Allowing minimal time to meet up or really not being able to at all. Leaving winter break to finally see each other.
