Packing for Uni is one hell of a task and you are bound to forget something. There are so many things you did not even know you needed and so many things you won’t realise you need until you get there; so here is a list of 10 things you may have forgotten to pack, just to help you out!
1. Extension Plug
There are very few plug sockets in uni halls and with phone chargers, laptops, consoles, lamps and such you are going to need more than you are given. So be sure to bring an extension plug so that you can keep all your bits and pieces charged. Also as a side note, do not forget to bring chargers for laptops etc, especially if you live far away as you will definitely struggle to get work done without a computer.
2. Clothes hangers
Most uni halls will have wardrobes within and you cannot live without clothes hangers – unless you want a mountain of clothes to fall on top of you each time you go to get changed. Normally when you buy new clothes shops will give you the option to keep the hangers which are free! They can also be found in pound shops and cheaper places such as Primark.
No matter how much you try to fight it, if you are living in uni accommodation with a kitchen, it is bound to get filthy. The floor especially. You do not want to be walking around barefoot, some slippers or sliders are ideal for pottering around in so that you don’t get sticky alcohol from the night before all over your feet.
4. Distinctive Cutlery
This was such an issue in our house. Cutlery would be left on the draining board and before you know it, gone. Poof. Vanished. Either that or people simply would not know which set was theirs. If you get cute cutlery with coloured or patterned handles then you’ll never forget. And if you are in a pinch you can just pop some nail varnish on the end so that you can identify your own.
Hangovers come in their thousands at Uni, especially during freshers week. Save yourself the headaches and come prepared with plenty of painkillers. They are also great to just have on hand, so be sure to pack some painkillers!
6. Tea towels
You may remember to pack tea towels but you’d be surprised how quickly you go through them! Someone will borrow one and it’ll disappear off the face of the planet. Another will be used to mop up a mysterious substance. Some will be magically sucked up by the washing machine. Be sure to bring plenty, nobody likes wet plates and bowls.
7. A food shop
Sounds stupid and whilst I know most parents will help with a food shop when they drop you off at your new home, it is so easy to forget. Make sure you do a food shop sufficient enough to last you the first week or so, so that when you are laid in bed dying after the partying the night before you can at least drag yourself to the kitchen for some sustenance.
8. Bath mat
If you are lucky enough to have a uni room with an ensuite – or even if you have shared bathrooms – you need a bath mat.
9. Clothes horse
Clothes horse, drying rack – whatever you choose to call it, you need one. If your Uni uses Circuit or any other company for laundry facilities you’ll know that it is pretty expensive to wash and dry your clothes. As a student, you are not likely to have the £1.50 t0 spare and more often than not the clothes don’t even come out of the dryer, dry. Save yourself the cash and by clothes horse, most clothes will dry overnight.
10. Dressing gown
Sometimes there are occasions where sweatshirts, hoodies, jackets and coats are not necessary but it is still chilly around the house. They are comfy and keep you warm in those chilly uni halls, so this is definitely a must-pack item if you get cold easily.
