Taking a year out from education is a big deal even if you don’t feel like it is. We are put into education from a young age and so taking a years break can make you forget somethings and get out of routines that were once second nature to you. Here is how I have prepared myself to start University after taking a gap year.
Firstly, throughout the year I made sure to keep myself busy with things.
This meant taking part in opportunities, embracing experiences, getting a job and making sure I had plenty of chances to get out of the house. This is key, a lot of people get used to doing nothing and get too comfortable not having any responsibilities. Make sure you don’t do this. Keep yourself busy so that becoming a busy student isn’t a big shock to your system.
Secondly, keep reading up on your studies.
The time away can usually make you forget A LOT! Carry on reading up on it all and refreshing your memory as often as you can. Expand your knowledge rather than forgetting everything you have already learnt. Don’t let any of the time you have already spent go to waste. A gap year is the chance to relax of course, however don’t be fooled it is a lot of time and you don’t want to waste it.
Prepare yourself for university early.
A year may seem like a long time but trust me time does fly. Don’t leave it until the last month to get ready for it all because sooner or later you will wonder where that time went and you will feel very unprepared. If you are moving in then look at the year as the best chance you have to prepare and get all the things you need.
One tip is to get everything before the summer holidays, that way when everyone else is busy shopping and rushing around to be ready, you can enjoy your last few months of freedom and no responsibilities.
Don’t take a gap year for the wrong reason.
You can’t prepare for university again if the whole reason you took a gap year in the first place was to get as far away from it as you possibly can. To prepare for university you have to be excited about going there, you have to look forward to the studies and the lessons you will learn. So get excited! Watch the move in videos on YouTube, go on the university website and learn everything you need to know about it, join the group chats etc. GET EXCITED!
Make sure you have saved your money up rather than going crazy and spending it. You need to practice adulating ASAP and make sure you start as a student with money rather than without. It will take a lot of stress off your shoulders.
University is a great opportunity and for many, due to costs, a once in a lifetime one so make sure the gap year was fulfilling but that you are looking forward to going back to university or starting it for that matter.
