The Top Ten Breakup Anthems Your Soul Needs

Heartbroken? Not left your bed in days? Eaten your weight in Ben & Jerry’s? Worry no more! Here’s our list of the best anthems you need for when you’re dealing with a breakup.

1. Back To Black – Amy Winehouse

Another heartbreaking anthem to add to the list, this song gives a raw and real look into the pain of having to let go of someone when you’re not ready to, and the feeling of resorting into sadness. It’s not a very uplifting one but will help if you’re still feeling the pain of the breakup.

2. Linger – The Cranberries

This song is particularly effective if you’re feeling betrayed or let down by your ex. It’s a raw and heartbreaking song about how it feels to be cheated on. Although sad songs seem counteractive to the purpose of getting over a breakup, sometimes you just need a good cry first in order to move in. This song is perfect for that.

3. Somebody That I Used To Know – Gotye

This one-hit-wonder perfectly sums up the feeling of being in a dysfunctional relationship and what it’s like to finally let go of it. If you’ve found yourself in a toxic and unhappy relationship this song will relate to you on a whole new level.

4. New Rules – Dua Lipa

This is one of those songs that cuts the crap, giving a simple and effective list of how to deal with getting over someone: “one don’t pick up the phone (…) two don’t let him in (…) three don’t be his friend”. Dua Lipa’s got your back.

5. Don’t Watch Me Cry – Jorja Smith

This intimate song gives insight into the feeling of being left on your own and the lingering feeling of wonder as to whether they’re hurting as much over you. It’s perfect for if you’re in that state of not knowing where you stand with someone and the anxiety and sadness that comes with it.

If you want a confidence boost and a strong reminder of your self worth this is definitely the song for your playlist. ‘Truth Hurts’ will make you remember that your ex could of “had a bad bitch”, his loss! This is a song for when it’s time to stop the moping and pick yourself up, if you’ve been sulking over a breakup for days, maybe even weeks or months this is the perfect song to help you feel better about yourself again.

Who better to soothe a broken heart than Adele? Any of her songs will probably help you through but this one sticks out as the ultimate break up anthem of all her albums. This song deals with the feeling of losing someone and the worry of never being able to find someone who will make you feel the same way.

9. Cornerstone – Arctic Monkeys

When you’re just not ready to let go of someone this is the song you need, this bitter-sweet ballad tells the story of a man who can’t stop seeing his ex everywhere he goes, only, of course, it’s not really her “only a lookalike”.
