How to Keep Your Healthy Resolutions

New Year, New You, right? Isn’t that the saying that consistently accommodates the ringing in of the New Year? However, for a lot of people, the “new you” portion of this phrase seems to fade away within the first month or two of the New Year.  It is extremely difficult to stay committed to your New Year’s Resolutions, especially when you have several goals you are looking to reach in the coming year.  We are only a few weeks into the 2015 and I have found a few ways to stay committed and motivated to my New Year’s healthy resolutions.

1. Find a workout buddy

The simplest way to assure you stay committed to your goal is to find a family member or friend with a similar goal, so that you can hold each other accountable.  Both my roommate and I want to be healthier and tone up before our spring break cruise in March.  It has been much easier having someone under the same roof aiming for a similar goal because I am less likely to sneak a cookie at night knowing she is going to tell me to put it down (haha)! We also go grocery shop together and plan meals far in advanced to be sure we stay on a healthy track.

2. Keep track

Keep a journal of your progress!  I started writing my progress each day and it is extremely motivating seeing the difference in my weight and energy level, all because I am committed to being healthier!  Journals aren’t only useful for tracking weight loss, but also for writing down daily thoughts, maybe for planning dinner dates with friends you haven’t seen in a while, or for tracking your study hours or grades for your classes.  Writing down your goals and progress will without a doubt keep you committed to your New Years Resolution because you will be able to look back at your entries and see how far you have come since the beginning of the year.

3. Share your goals

Tell people about your resolutions.  Telling people about what you want to change in the coming year will keep you motivated to work towards that goal.  The next time you see the person you talked about your resolutions with you will be able to talk about your progress and be proud of how far you’ve come since you’ve last talked to that person.  Maybe they will even notice a change in you without you telling them!

4. Set Goals

See Also

Set short-term and long-term goals.  If you only set long-term goals, you will think your progress is miniscule, even though it just means your goal will take more than a few months to accomplish.  It’s okay if your long-term goal is the one that is most important to you, however set short-term goals as well, so that they can act as milestones and smaller accomplishments in the grand scheme of the year.

5. Treat yourself

Treat yourself when you notice changes in yourself.  When you realize that your New Years Resolution has become apart of your lifestyle, reward yourself.  Whether that reward is a cheat day, a new outfit, a day off, or a much needed massage, be sure to thank yourself for having the discipline to remain true to your goals.

I hope these tips help you in the New Year to becoming a better version of yourself!  As many people would say, “the best is yet to come.”  I truly believe that the New Year is the start of a new 365-page book that you have the option of making a novelty.  Make your year remarkable starting with just a few little New Years Resolutions!
