17 Cool Rugs That Can Change Your Room

Rugs are the perfect way to transform any living space from drab to fab. The right rug can really bring a room together and tie in all of the other room decor together!

1. Geometric Area Rug

If you are a fan of clean lines and simplicity, I recommend getting a rug with a simple, symmetrical geometric pattern. Color is completely up to your discretion and really depends on the other home decor you have and what room this rug will find as its home. For a cozy, living room space I suggest a nice beige or cream shade, as earth tones can really add a calming effect to any space. As for material and thickness, I would say go thinner for living space and more lush for a bedroom. The thinner rug will look nice under large furniture such as a nice sectional couch or coffee table.

2. Simple Round Rug

Do not be afraid to play around with shape when choosing a rug. The safe bet is usually a rectangular rug, but mixing things up and choosing a round rug, for example, creates a fun, different vibe for your place. A small round rug is perfect if you need to fill a smaller space. For instance, if you want to create a little reading nook in the corner of a room, a small round rug with a cozy chair, side table, and a lamp is all you need. The round rug will make the area look so inviting!

3. Textured Rug

The texture is also a good thing to look at and experiment with when looking for the rug of your dreams. From shag, memory foam, faux fur, even wool, there are so many different types of materials that rugs are constructed with, and finding the right one for you is vital to creating your ideal living space. One of my favorites to have in my place is a rug with a raised pattern, soft of course, as it just gives a luxurious yet comfortable feeling to the rug.

4. Memory Foam Bath Mat

Now, when looking for rugs for your new place, you cannot forget the bathroom. Bath mats are essential to making your day to day getting ready experience as enjoyable as possible. I prefer to have memory foam bath mats, as they ooze luxury for an affordable price. As soon as you hop out of the shower or bathtub, your feet sink into cool memory foam that forms to your shape. It feels as though the bath mat is designed especially for you!

5. Rainbow Rug

Whether you have a little one running around, or just love color, a rainbow rug adds such a fun pop of color to any room! There are so many of these on the market right now, from bathroom rugs to accent rugs for the bedroom, and most of them are incredibly affordable. A quick tip: if you are searching for a rainbow accent rug, look in the children’s bedroom section at your local store, that is where a lot of them usually hide! There are more muted, pastel options like the photo below, but if you love a bright rainbow then go for it and do not hold back!

6. Shag Rug

Shag has been a popular rug texture for decades and for good reason. It makes a bold statement and feels so nice on your feet. I have seen a lot of these in living rooms as they look so lush underneath a sleek coffee table or comfy couch, but of course, this type of rug would also look stunning and inviting in any room of your home.

7. Groovy Round Rug

This next rug is a little tougher to find, as it is quite a specific style and shape, however vintage is in so luckily for all of us, more stores are starting to stock accordingly. Target has a few to choose from on their website as well as Overstock if this sounds like the rug for you! A round rug with a groovy design and color palette immediately sets the tone for a room and transports you to another time.

8. Animal Print Rug

So animal print was super in style a few years ago and is making a comeback! I have seen zebra print, cheetah print, leopard, snake, so many types of animal print appearing on rugs recently, and honestly, I am here for it. An animal print rug is a perfect addition to a mostly black and white room. It adds spunk and pizazz to a clean, minimalistic space! You will definitely see more of these popping up on the market in the winter months.

9. Classy Swirl Rug

If animal print and groovy patterns are not your jam, go for a classic, simple swirl patterned rug. I feel like these rugs never go out of style and are always so easy to find in accent rugs and even bathroom mats. This pattern in a neutral tone such as beige, black, or white looks so fresh and classy in any space.

10. Faux Fur Rug

If you are going for a luxurious look, a faux fur rug is the way to go, especially if you choose a crisp white or a dark gray shade. This type of rug immediately elevates the entire room and makes everything appear more put together and expensive. As the girl in the photo below is demonstrating, it also makes the perfect place to sit and have your morning cup of coffee.

11. Floral Rug

Another classic rug style is the floral patterned rug. It can get a bad reputation for looking old, but if you get the right pattern with adequate spacing and a good color palette, it can make a space look elegant and homey. A nice cream or beige background with evenly spaced out flowers would look stunning in an entryway or a dining room area!

12. Warm Wool Rug

If you are not a fan of soft textured rugs, go for something like a wool rug. This is a thinner rug and is great for a space that has a lot going on and just needs one last simple touch to finish it off. It will not distract from your other decor but will add a bit of warmth and texture to a space.

13. Woven Rug

Similar to the wool rug in texture and appearance is a classic, woven rug. It looks flawless in a neutral color of course and matches so many different types of decor and aesthetics. It is a good one to get if you just need a simple and clean look.

14. Vintage Rug

Similar to the groovy, round rug but a little more on the classic side is a vintage rug. Usually, with a border and a muted pattern, vintage rugs give a space so much character and charm. It does not even have to be truly vintage, many stores and companies design rugs to look vintage, so now you can get a vintage vibe but on a budget!

15. Frame Border Rug

Back to a simpler style is a rug with a frame border. It usually does not have a pattern and is typically two-toned to create dimension and movement. These are great basic rugs that are wonderful for kitchens and underneath large furniture.

16. Heathered Rug

If you want to go with two shades for a rug but the frame border does not appeal to you, then a heathered rug may be the one for you! A heathered rug with two different colors sort of mixed together creates a lot of movement in a living space. A beige and white heathered rug looks so nice for a bohemian style room especially!

17. Pretty Paisley Rug

For a living room, office, or den one of my personal favorite designs is a nice paisley rug. It gives off such an elevated, high-end look and is an easy way to add color into a space. There are super colorful ones and also more muted tones such as the one pictured below.
