10 Must-Seen Amazon Prime Shows You Can’t Miss

With an influx in the number of streaming services available, it can be hard to figure out which shows to watch, and even what service to watch on altogether. Whether you were initially a Netflix or Hulu fan, each streaming service has it’s own original shows and network shows that are entertaining. These 10 must-see Amazon Prime shows are ones that you cannot miss. Prime fan or not, you should consider watching each of these shows as they are all well made and unique. 

1. Sex and the City

This 1998 classic with Sarah Jessica Parker is a comedic romance that features the icon, Carrie Bradshaw, and her friend group. Bradshaw and her friends are thrown into the dating scene and social life that crawls throughout New York City, where the show is set. As the show goes on, overarching themes of friendship, independence, and trust begin to form, creating a more dramatic undertone. Sex and the City became so popular that there is also a film series, and newer TV series that follows a younger version of Bradshaw called the Carrie Diaries. The cult-like following behind this show and the impact it had on the 2000’s pop culture makes it a must-watch on Amazon Prime.

2. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is a quick-witted comedy that centers around a Jewish woman in the late 1950’s who is attempting to fulfill her lifelong dream of becoming a stand-up comedian. After performing in a low rent club, the owner decides to sign her as a client, seeing the potential in her comedic acts. As the audience, you find yourself laughing through each episode and hoping for her career to take off. Along with the main plot lines, the show has strong subplots that include her rocky relationship with her husband and her two children, which provide a more serious tone in the show. 

3. Curb Your Enthusiasm

Larry David, the writer of Seinfeld, writes and acts in the show Curb Your Enthusiasm which focuses on a fictionalized version of David himself. The series has 10 seasons following his life as a television writer in major cities. Originally developed from the one-hour television special, “Larry David: Curb Your Enthusiasm,” the show is shot in an interesting format similar to a mockumentary and won a Golden Globe for best television series in 2003. The comedic 30-minute episodes are an ode to everyday life in which, as David says, “you should curb your enthusiasm.”

4. Mr. Robot

Mr. Robot debuted in 2015 but began gaining traction later for the face of the television program, Rami Malek, had played Freddie Mercury in the Queen biopic bohemian rhapsody in 2018. The show shows the nerd of the century, Elliot, who works as a cybersecurity computer programmer by day and hacker by night. Elliot, both anti-social yet passionate, works to take down corporate America after being recruited by a national hacking organization. The show follows important themes that are realistic to present-day and are becoming more and more relevant. Coming out with the final season in 2019, the 4 season show follows an interesting plotline and characters that are worth the watch.

5. The Sopranos

This six-season hit centers around an Italian family in the mafia. Lead by Tony Soprano, the show unfolds by showing Tony Soprano’s emotions when talking with his therapist, along with the intense violence that follows the Italian mob. Containing all aspects of a drama, this show is long but well worth the watch. Following a God Father like plotline, The Sopranos shows a more day to day lifestyle for those interested in a serious depiction of how the mafia operates. 

6. House M.D.

Medical shows have become a new favorite genre for many viewers, and this one is a classic. Debuting in 2004, right before Grey’s Anatomy, House M.D. follows the storyline of a prodigy drug addict doctor played by Hugh Laurie. Each episode shows a different, unique medical case that seems impossible to crack until the last few minutes of the episode. The audience follows House’s ups and downs through his journey as a medical professional and addict, along with various other subplot romances that occur in the hospital in which the show takes place.

7. Bosch

Bosch follows a homicide detective in Los Angeles. The show follows a continuing investigation throughout each season while showing background on the leading character Hieronymus Bosch. After he solves a famous case in the show that an author picks up and writes a book about and eventually becomes a movie, leading Bosch to purchase the home of a lifetime. The home looks over the entire city of Los Angeles and has many cameos in the show. As he looks over Los Angeles, Bosch comes off as stoic and powerful. Originally based on a book series by Michael Connelly, Bosch so far has six seasons, five of which are released on Prime already.

8. Survivor

The 588 episode show feels never-ending but is still famous for a reason. The reality game show takes a group of competitors to a private tropical island, or rural area in which participants are expected to survive challenges and outlast being voted off the show. Survivor combines aspects of competition and popularity, which spices up the show compared to others similar to it. Along with this, Survivor has a cult-like following similar to the Bachelor in which big fans host viewing parties, or make game boards voting for which competitor they think will be the year’s “Survivor.” The show has gained such a wide following, it even has it’s own website that operates similar to fantasy football. Hosted by Jeff Probst, Survivor is all about outwitting, outplaying, and outlasting.

9. Psych

The show Psych is a traditional detective show with a twist. Rather than having serious tones to the story, Psych is a comedy that has you falling in love with the intelligent, detective duo Shawn and Gus. After conning the police into thinking he has psychic powers to help solve crimes, Shawn and Gus begin the business “Psych” in which a series of complicated cases are given to them to solve. 

10. American Horror Story

Angled more towards teens and young adults, American Horror Story is arguably unlike any other show you have seen or will watch. The horror drama changes settings and characters every season, surprising the audience with new scary scenes. Although many actors are invited back to other seasons, they play entirely new characters that are in different time zones or locations. This gives the show a Twilight Zone-like style that is unique and adds to the mystery of the show. Leaving nearly every episode as an uncomfortable cliff hanger, the show has you coming back for more of the creepy series.
