10 Free Activities To Do With Friends If You Go To Emerson College

There’s no reason for you to spend money to have a good time with your friends. Being a college student is hard enough to be worrying about adding more to your student loans. So, here’s a list of ten free things to do with your friends if you go to Emerson College.

1. Spend the day in Boston Common

There’s no excuse to not go to the Commons, after all, it is in front of Emerson campus. With more than 300 hundred years of history (being America’s oldest public park), it has become a popular destination for both tourists and Bostonians. Aside from taking a stroll around the park, there are many other things to do in Boston Common. It is the perfect spot for friends to hang out without the worry of having to spend money.

In Spring and Summer, it’s a beautiful place to bring a blanket and snacks to enjoy a picnic with your friends. You can also play games or sports –there are many courts where you can play tennis or basketball. Street performers playing music and doing all sorts of tricks are also a way of free entertainment.  I know that Emerson students love completing their homework while enjoying being in the park. Even for a moment, it is an escape from the busy city life that surrounds us.

In the winter, despite the cold, the Common offers other ways of entertainment. The famous landmark The Frog Pond becomes an ice skating rink. Where Emerson students can go, after their classes, to have fun with their friends. On Tuesdays, college students receive half of  the price of admission. So be on the lookout for the college free night schedule: A day for college students to enjoy free admission to the Pond.

2. Visit the Botanic Garden

After an evening 300-course class, why not head over to the Botanic Garden? Not such a great idea with the cold weather of winter. But still, it is a wonderful place for a stroll. To sit around and chat with your friends. To get away from the frenzied life of being an Emerson student, and enjoy a quiet moment with your friends surrounded by dogs, birds, and squirrels.  No matter the season, the scenery is always great for an Instagram photoshoot: In Spring and Summer with the flower beds, in Fall with the turning of the leaves, and in Winter with the park covered in a white cold blanket.

This is definitely a must among college students, and something that Emersonians enjoy doing over their weekends. With such a variety of stores along Newbury St, who is to say that there’s nothing to do around Emerson?

Enjoy your free time by visiting stores with your friends, trying on clothes, makeup, and perfume. Visit the famous comic store at 348 Newbury St, or lavish with your friends at the fancy chocolatier LA Burdick. It is such a great way to bond with your besties.

4. Game Night

You can also stay at home and enjoy a night of indoor free-time activities. Organize a game night with your friends, put out a call to see who has what games. Pick fun board games such as Betrayal at the House of the Hill (very spooky game to play) or something classic like Monopoly. If someone owns a console, why not play a video game? It is always fun to beat your friends at a Mario Kart race. Put on some music and be prepared to laugh a lot.

5. Movie Night

I believe this is one of the most interesting ways to get to know someone. For sure, their tastes in movies says a lot about them (don’t judge!). Agree on one night of the week to pick a movie- throw the darts, or rock-paper-scissors to decide who goes first. Bring your blankets, snacks, and willingness to watch something that might scar you for life –in a good or bad way.

6. Karaoke Night

Always take into consideration your neighbors and the quiet hours– especially during midterms or finals. Plan a karaoke night with your friends. There’s not much to do besides bringing a microphone and a stereo. My friends and I, always decide on a theme first, such as Disney songs or break up songs. Be prepared to hear lots of screaming and high pitch voices.

7. Share A Hobby And Start A Circle

Why not share one of your hobbies with your friends? It might be fun to start a class circle with your besties and learn something about and with each other. It can be about anything. If you know how to knit, draw, paint, origami, etc., or it can also be a language– if you speak more than one language why not teach your friends some new words? You can even start an HTML class circle and build websites together. Honestly, it is just a new way to spend time with your friends and do something creative, new and productive.
