10 Awesome College Courses That Actually Exist

College is the time for us to explore our interests and see what we want to do with the rest of our lives. However, for many people, their course schedule allows for a little extra time to set aside for “fun” classes…some of which you probably didn’t even know existed. That being said, here are 10 awesome college courses that actually exist…sign me up!

1. BIO 244: Viticulture and Enology (aka Wine Tasting)

That’s right. A whole class dedicated to tasting wine. At Miami University – Ohio, the students learn about the winemaking process and then get to taste the wine they are learning about. Any student can join this class, as long as they are 21 or older, of course. Former students say that the class helped them out when they attended professional dinners because they knew what to look for in a bottle of wine.

2. HIS 103S: The History of Surfing

Maybe it shouldn’t come as a surprise that a school in California has a class on the history of surfing. After all, why not learn the history behind this popular sport. According to University of California-Santa Barbra’s course guide, this class is offered in the evenings. I guess that means the students can surf before the lecture.

3. CO200: Queen Bees, WannaBees, and Mean Girls

Wait, there’s a class inspired by Mean Girls? If you are like me, then you have seen Mean Girls hundreds of times and can watch the movie on mute and say the lines as it goes. At Colorado College you can take a class that uses movies like Mean Girls to explore the motives behind women who seek authority. Sounds like the homework is going to be a lot of movie watching. Count me in!

4. ENGL 111.301: Wasting Time on the Internet

Many students who use their laptops in class will go on Facebook or check their email during the lecture. I once witnessed someone watching Netflix in a lecture. Apparently there is a class at UPenn dedicated to wasting time on the Internet. Not only that, but this class fulfills major requirements and is actually required for some students. According to the course guide, “distraction, multi-tasking, and aimless drifting is mandatory.” My question is: how will the professor know if the students are paying attention to class and doing the assignments or just checking social media like everyone else?

5. SO-25: The Sociology of Miley Cyrus

Skidmore College offers a summer course for students to analyze the media and society based off Miley Cyrus’ career. They use her life and apply sociological theories and methods to help understand her actions and society’s perception of her. I hope one day I am famous enough where my life can be used to explain a subject in an exciting way.

6. Harry Potter: Literary Tradition and Popular Culture

I am a huge Potterhead and I am currently very jealous of all the students at Otis College because they get the chance to take this class. Not only to they read and discuss the Harry Potter books, but they also get sorted into the Hogwarts Houses and have a House Cup. This class explores what it is about Harry Potter that made so many people fall in love with reading. If you didn’t get your letter, then this class is the next best thing.

7. Cow to Cone

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream. Almost everyone loves ice cream. At Penn State you can take a class to learn the ins and outs about everyone’s favorite summer treat. This is the class where Ben and Jerry got their start, so you know it is worth it.

8. HES 351: Stress Management

This is a course that I think everyone needs to be able to take. Not only is it a stress management class, but it is also a 300 level class, so it is a great option for upper classmen. This class teaches you meditation techniques as well as various types of therapy like art therapy or humor therapy. A majority of the student who take this get an A and the class gets a lot of positive feedback. I petition that this class be offered at all campuses.

9. History of Tattoos

Students at the University of Redlands- California can learn the meanings behind certain tattoos, if they opt to take this class. This is great course for someone who has ink and wants to be able to educate their family on how it wasn’t just a drunk mistake. It is a great way to let society know that tattoos do not equal dirty.

10. PE 1657: Tree Climbing

This class is a way to release your inner child and take part in a childhood pastime. Not only will you learn how to climb trees, but you will also learn how to climb from tree to tree. Who would have thought you can learn how to climb a tree in New York, since this course is offered at Cornell University. Basically this class will allow you to escape responsibilities for a while and pretend to be a monkey.
