What it’s like to be the Girl Who Sucks at Sports

We remember many things from our middle and high school days. Crappy cafeteria food, that one boy who you didn’t want anyone in the world knowing you dated, or copying off that cute boy in your algebra class. But the one thing that we all can relate to is that we HATED gym class. Through our forced participation, it was as if our embarrassment brought joy to the P.E. teachers.

Now I’ve tried many different sports growing up. Getting dirty, bruises, and smelly uniforms never were fun for me. I’m not about sports and I never was. Getting picked last for everything, mildewed showers in the locker rooms, and the idea of dodge balls getting thrown at your face didn’t sound appealing to me. Let me explain to you my experience of forever being the girl who sucked at any and all forms of physical activity.

If you remember back to grade school your first experience with physical activity wasn’t all that bad. You got to wear a cute outfit and plus you had more energy than you knew what to do with, so the class was somewhat enjoyable.

Then comes your first day of Middle School P.E. where you’re forced to do 100 sit-ups and you quickly realize that this is the end for you.

Then your P.E. teacher makes your life a living hell because you’re “not putting in enough effort.”

And you look at them like…

Gym class is awful once you hit puberty. You’re not sure about anything that’s going on with your body. And you spend most of P.E. daydreaming about what you’d rather be doing than wearing some sweaty uniform.

You come back to reality only when you see the ball coming straight for your face.

And the thing was the ball didn’t just hit you during volleyball.

You can’t forget the gym class favorite—dodgeball.

Congratulations! You’ve made it through your awful preteen years. It’ time for high school P.E. From the movies you’ve seen, it doesn’t seem too bad, so on the first day you show up confidence.

Your teacher says that everyone will be running a mile for the warm up. There’s no way you want to be a part of that so you ditch.

Then she catches you hiding in the bleachers.

You’ve always envied the girl who scores the winning point because the boys immediately flocked to her side.

Deciding that you too can be that girl, the first time you try and catch the ball doesn’t go as planned.

After realizing you will never be known as the “Hot Athletic Girl,” you decide to try and stick with the attractive part.

At least this way there’s only one sport that you don’t have to “pretend” to like.

Once you get to college you’re forced to watch the Super Bowl and instead of trying to impress your crush by acting interested in the game, you’re not shy about giving your opinion on the sport.

Raven Symone said it best, those activities “required” to pass the class were useless. How would climbing a rope or seeing how far we can jump help us later in life? Here’s your answer: it won’t.

Looking back, if our gym classes were as fun as Coach Carr’s then we might have enjoyed it a bit more.
