10 Reasons To Go To Amsterdam This Summer

Check out our reasons to go to Amsterdam! Discover why you should choose Amsterdam as your travel destination this summer.

If you haven’t already, you should really consider going to Amsterdam this summer. Although many mistake the city for being solely about the Red Light District and coffee shops, there is so much more to see and do, especially when the weather is good. So, find a group of friends or convince your significant other that you are both in need of a weekend break to Amsterdam. If you need any help, here’s 10 reasons to go to Amsterdam this summer.

1. It’s SO easy to get there

With loads of flights everyday from Gatwick, Heathrow, Stansted and Luton, it’s never been easier to get to Amsterdam. Plus, the flight is only 45 minutes so it literally takes less time to fly across the channel than it does to get out of central London to the airport. Now, there is a direct train to Amsterdam from London St. Pancras that drops you off right in the centre of Amsterdam. If you book in advance, train tickets can be as cheap as £35!

2. It’s a really beautiful city

One of the most obvious reasons to go to Amsterdam is simply that it is a beautiful city. With canals and small side streets, Amsterdam is a really pretty city to explore. If the sun is out, why not rent a small boat and discover the city from a different perspective.

3. There are lots of museums to visit

With the Van Gogh, Rijksmuseum and Stedelijk, you really are spoilt for choice when it comes to art museums in Amsterdam. Make sure to reserve tickets in advance so you don’t have to stand in a long queue!

4. Discover the city on a bike!

As the city of bikes, there is no better place (and way) to get free exercise on a bike than in Amsterdam. The city is extremely bike friendly (they have priority) so it’s not like cycling in the U.K. where the roads are less used to cyclists. But, do be careful and respect other people on the roads.

5. Sit in the park

Now that you’ve found yourself a bike, why not check out and chill in one of the many parks the city has to offer. Vondelpark is right in the middle of everything and a short walking distance from the Museum district so definitely check it out.

6. Go shopping

Amsterdam has lots of small boutiques where you can find some great, more unique pieces. They also have some amazing vintage shops in the centre. Definitely explore the “negen straatjes” on foot!

7. The nightlife!

This reason will probably be unsurprising to most but Amsterdam has such a fun nightlife. Beyond Leidseplein or Dam Square, there are lots of cool little bars and terraces to sit at in “De Pijp”.

8. Dutch people are great at English

Unlike some other European cities, Dutch people are really good at speaking English which means that there are no language barriers and it’s really easy to get on with them. They are super friendly and will love it if you put in a bit of effort trying to learn about their little city or language. Don’t be shy!

9. Music festivals

In the summer, there are loads of really cool festivals on in Amsterdam. Check out the schedule in advance, before you book your flights, and see if there are any that interest you!

10. Do it while your young!

Although there are so many ways that Amsterdam is great, it really is an amazing city for young people so definitely visit it now whilst you’re young and free! There’s so much to do, see, eat and drink there that you definitely won’t be disappointed.
