Syracuse is known for its party habits and freezing winters.. and that is basically the extent of what most Freshman know on move-in day. When I received my dorm assignment, I had no idea if I should be smiling ear to ear or in the midst of a breakdown. But, after just a few months here at Syracuse, here is the ultimate Freshman dorm ranking for Syracuse University:

5. Lawrenson

Coming in last place is Lawrenson. Off on the edge of campus and pretty isolated, the main perk of Lawrenson is the Starbucks in West Campus right nearby. Although nearby BBB and Sadler–the closest dining hall–the shivering walk outside to get food is a pain in the dead of winter when all you want to do is cuddle up. Freshman in Lawrenson will claim they love their home, but at three in the morning every night when the fire alarm starts blaring and they have to climb down from the twentieth floor, Sadler kids pull up their covers and laugh.

4. “The Others”

Whether this mean living in DellPlain, Ernie Davis, Haven, Shaw, you are sure to get the response “huh?” when you tell your friends where you live. For the select few Freshman who end up in predominantly upperclassman dorms, it is truly a win/lose situation. Many of the mixed dorms are generally nicer and closer to the center of campus, but these students claim to miss the “Freshman Experience” that comes with living surrounded by people in the same position as you and looking to make new friends.

3. Sadler

Given that Sadler is the honors dorm, the insides are much nicer than basically any other dorm Freshman can end up in. The rooms are a bit bigger, and everything just feels a little fresher, cleaner, and newer.. not to mention the dining hall just down the stairs. Considered Lawrenson’s better looking sibling, Sadler is a solid place to live. It’s basically off campus, but a little closer than Lawrenson and BBB. It’s not the most social dorm, but residents claim to be super close with the people the live near. Overall, Sadler is a pretty good place to live.

2. BBB

Although it is quite the trek from the rest of campus, students who live in BBB swear it is the absolute best place to live. Because BBB is three all-Freshman dorms–Brewster, Boland, and Brockway–it is a very social place and no matter what hour of the day, there is something going on. When it’s cold out, BBB is nice because there is a dining hall, gym, study area, and restaurant open until midnight all in the basement of Brockway.

So, you never, ever have to leave. And, most people don’t. Some of the drawbacks to BBB are the general location and sketchy walk home to the ghetto of Syracuse. However, the main downfall is that when you do have to leave to go the class, the stairs up to campus and just the length of the walk in general are a pain in the ass. That is, unless you’re in on the secret elevator in the parking garage next door.

1. The Mount

THE MOUNT! Although the stairs are rough, the mount is definitely the place to live as a Freshman. When all your friends have to hike up from the outskirts of campus, you simply walk down the stairs and right onto the quad. Flint and Day open rooms are the perfect place for a party and students who live there sure know how to have a good time. Bonus: a tunnel leads between Day and Flint, and connects the two at their own dining hall, Graham, as well as a midnight restaurant and mini grocery story. Students on the mount swear by it. And, honestly, we all understand why.
