Networking is an important part of the career search process. While it can be something that makes even the most confident person nervous, this fear is heightened in those who are more introverted and shy. Overcoming this hurdle can be terrifying and may seem impossible, but there are things that can be done to help make networking doable, even for the shyest of people. Check out these top networking tips for help!

1. Use social media to initiate conversations.

While many may say that social media is taking social skills away from young people, many young people are using it to help begin their networking. Using sites like LinkedIn and Twitter makes it easy for people to network and talk with people who are in the field without the pressure of meeting face-to-face upon the first point of contact. There are even apps that work like tinder for networking for careers!

2. Visualize the positive outcomes of networking.

While networking can be terrifying, it is important to remember why you do it. Networking allows you the opportunity to meet more people in your field who may become mentors. You may also get new leads on new jobs or better positions than what you are currently in now. Keeping the benefits of networking in mind and thinking about your future can help ease the nerves.

3. Remember that those you are networking with are humans, too!

At the end of the day, though those you are networking with may be higher up in the field than you are, they are humans too. It may be intimidating to think that they may have the power to change your life, but they were once where you are. They understand nerves but showing that you are confident can help you out.

While there are some people who make networking super easy with little effort, they have to practice too. Everything worth doing and succeeding at takes practice. Many career services offer tips for networking and if you go to a career fair, your school might even have a table for you to practice selling yourself. Knowing what to say and when can help your confidence level exponentially.
