20 Reasons Michigan State Is The Absolute Best

Between the extra curriculars, the people, and the atmosphere, Michigan State is the absolute best place to be. There’s something for every type of person, so it’s almost impossible to not find happiness. There’s no doubt about it, Michigan State is amazing – and here’s 20 reasons why.

1. Big Ten Sports

From trying to layer on as much green and white as possible for a tailgate to standing in bipolar Michigan Novembers at a football game, the Big Ten becomes a part of you that you can never quite let go of.

2. Four Seasons

Growing up in Michigan, I never thought I would appreciate trudging to class in a parka and Sorel boots; however, I have found out that some out of state students are attracted to MSU for this reason alone. There is nothing prettier than the Michigan State campus when the leaves are multi-colored or the ground is snow-covered.

3. Historic and New

MSU has the best of both worlds. We have the older, more historic dorms and buildings in the North neighborhood and ultra modern architecture in the Brody neighborhood. The campus manages to merge old and new while still maintaining a consistent charm throughout it.

4. Abundance of Cafeterias

What goes better with a cold winter day than an endless amount of comfort food? MSU has myriad cafeterias with dietary options for everyone. There’s even an app that shows the meals at every cafeteria on campus so you can plan your day accordingly!

5. Friendliest People

Michigan State students and alumni are simply good people, and East Lansing is a community like no other. There’s no better feeling than having someone call, “Go Green!” to you while you’re sporting a Spartan sweatshirt in a completely different country.

6. School Spirit

Once a Spartan, always a Spartan. No one leaves MSU without the strongest dedication to the Spartan Nation. Win or lose, we still wake up at 5 a.m. on game day to cheer on our football team.

7. Alumni

Spartans hire other Spartans. I have had so many MSU alumni speak in my classes about their companies and tips on how to be successful in the workforce. It is such a good way to make connections and get students excited about the future.

8. Cottage Inn

The after party to any party. The best part: you don’t need an invitation. Home to the world’s best ranch and the Stagger Home Pizza, Cottage Inn is one of the best places in East Lansing.

9. Darties

When tailgate season is over, Spartans need something to fill the void on a sunny, winter Saturday. Thus, the day party is born. Students spend their February weekends partying outside and celebrating life in East Lansing.

10. Greek Life

With 14 sororities and over 30 fraternities at MSU, Greek life is a great way to make friends and get involved on campus. Michigan State has a large Greek community and dedicated alumni that provide connections and lifelong friendship.

11. Sparty

Hands down, MSU has the best mascot in the country. The iconic mascot can be seen driving around in his golf cart, attending sports events, and even walking around the Union. He’s also always down to take a selfie with you.

12. Motivated People

Work hard, play hard. Everyone needs balance in their life. During the school week, the library and Union are overflowing with students studying all night. Spartans know what it takes to succeed and work hard to achieve it.

13. Best Dorm Life

Sharing an 11 by 12 box with a complete stranger is one of the greatest experiences, from random conversations at 2 a.m. to rolling down the hallway in laundry trolleys. Sure, the dorms are cramped and have too many fire drills, but you will find yourself missing the constant company that a dorm provides.

14. Parties

It’s no secret that State is a party school. 50,000 students gives you a little bit of everything! No matter what day of the week it is, if you want to party, there are a ton of other Spartans who will join you.

15. Diversity

Michigan State attracts students from all across the globe. Even if you lived in Michigan your whole life, East Lansing allows you to befriend people you never thought you would meet.

16. Variety of Majors

From engineering to communications, to environmental science to undecided, Michigan State has a diverse range of majors and advisors who can help you make your decision. In addition to the many majors, State offers a club for almost every interest, so you can test the waters before committing!

17. Red Cedar

Dividing North campus from South campus, the Red Cedar is the most beautiful barrier standing in your path. Sure, it’s a little annoying having to walk over to the next bridge when you’re late for class, but the view of the river makes it all worth it.

18. Wharton Center

This large auditorium hosts everything from MBA graduations to Broadway musicals like Wicked and Rent. Students get discounts for the shows and the Wharton Center even hires students to be ushers.

19. Graffiti Bridge

Under the bridge on Farm Lane is one of the coolest spots to take pictures. Get that perfect, edgy Instagram picture using the colorful graffiti wall as your background.

20. The Rock

No matter the day, there is always a club or group standing at The Rock with free food or merchandise promoting their cause. Located in the middle of campus, The Rock is a special part of the MSU experience.
