With so many new thing being thrown at you during the first few months of the semester, it can feel a little overwhelming. Don’t worry! These life hacks at The University of Pittsburgh will help you succeed through all of the craziness on campus!

1. Study at the top of the Cathedral.

If you’re tired of your boring study spot try the Honors College floor of the Cathedral (Floor 35). The view and quiet space combine for the perfect spot to get work done.

2. Download the Dunkin Donuts App.

Tired of waiting in the long line on Forbes for coffee in the morning? Download the Dunkin Donuts app to order ahead, and never wait in line again! (Plus, your first drink is free when you sign up)

3. Bring a power strip to Hillman.

Bring a power strip to Hillman and never find yourself in the darkest corner of the library again searching for an outlet.

4. 10B over the 10A any day.

The 10B will take you to upper campus much faster than the 10A.

5. Take the free T-shirts.

In the moment you may think you’ll never were the free T-shirts, but things can change. Take a T-shirt any chance you get.

6. Go to Burrito Bowl in the Pete.

Chipotle and Hello Bistro too pricey for you? The Burrito Bowl in the Pete offers bowls and salads that are a nice, cheap alternative to your favorite spots. (They also take Dining Dollars!)

7. Ask about ice cream flavors in Quickzone.

Is your favorite ice cream flavor never at the Quickzone? Ask a cashier to check in the back, they may have it in storage!

8. Get an upperclassmen to hold classes for you.

If you are worried a class may fill up before you can pick it up ask an upperclassman to hold it for you, they will most likely do it in exchange for a few meal swipes.

9. Bring your own Nutella.

Surprisingly the dining hall does not provide Nutella. Bring your own jar next time you grab a meal at Market, a Pitt waffle with Nutella with change your life.

10. Take the bus to Trader Joe’s.

Sometimes the limited selection of the IGA can get to be too much. Take a quick bus ride to the Trader Joe’s (or Whole Foods). The 71C and 75 are two routes that run straight through campus.

11. Become friends with the residence hall and dining hall staff.

Befriend the university staff, dining and residence hall staff especially. They will look out for you if you treat them right!

12. Use one dryer cycle for two loads of laundry.

One dryer cycle (1 hour) can dry two cycles worth of laundry (30 minutes). This two for the price of one deal has been tested to really work!

13. Download transportation apps.

Tired of never knowing when the shuttles will come? Download this app, and never be uninformed again! Also download this app for Port Authority transit systems.

14. Steal dressing and sauce from the Cathedral dining hall.

The plethora of dressings and sauces in the Cathedral food court is open for the taking, so take them!

There is an annual fee for students ($70) with the assumption that everyone will steal items from Market. Use this to your advantage and take what you pay for.

17. Scan your textbooks.

Don’t want to buy or rent a textbook next semester? Check to see if it is on reserve at the library and scan the pages that you need.

18. Buy Tupperware.

Tupperware is a lifesaver. If you like the dining hall food, this will quickly become one of your favorite life hacks at The University of Pittsburgh. Bring some to Market and fill them up with anything you please. Cookies, cereal, french fries, the possibilities are endless.

19. Stay in the dining hall forever and ever.

One swipe into the dining hall in the morning is good until closing time. Take advantage of the endless food for the day while studying.

20. Make your own grilled cheese in market.

This is one of my all time favorite life hacks at The University of Pittsburgh. If you are ever craving a grilled cheese but it is not grilled cheese day have no fear! Ask the deli for white bread with cheese and place your sandwich in the panini press. Viola!
