How To Party At IU When You’re Not 21

Being a freshman can be really hard. Everyone wants to party, but no one really knows how to yet. Most freshmen end up wandering around campus trying to find a party. Unfortunately they usually end up not finding anything or even worse they arrive at a party after the booze has dried up. Luckily, I have some tips to help you to party at IU until you’re 21!

1. Join a frat or sorority.

Probably the easiest way to guarantee you’ll never be bored and party at IU. We have pairs with frats at least every Thursday-Saturday. Fraternity rush happens early in the fall so you won’t have to wait long at all if you’re a guy. Most frat parties at open up at midnight too. Right now is the perfect time to get to know the brothers and hopefully get a bid! Don’t show up in a big, all-guy group though. At least try to have a 1:1 ratio. Sorority recruitment isn’t until January, so sorry girls, you gotta wait a little longer.

2. Get a fake!

Definitely the riskiest way of getting alcohol. However, what’s life without a little risk, right? If you’re going to get a fake make sure you get a good one. It has to scan! KOK is the strictest bar to get into so you probably shouldn’t try it for the first time there. I would recommend testing it out at a less popular bar or a VP.

3. Befriend upperclassmen!

Joining clubs and getting involved at IU will guarantee you a better experience. The people you meet will improve your social and academic life. Some clubs offer a mentor program, which means they’ll pair you up with an upperclassman. Definitely say yes if they offer this. Your mentor will be your guide for everything IU. They’ll help you over the freshmen hump and maybe even buy you some peach taaka! Let’s be honest do you even go to IU if you don’t drink peach taaka?

4. “Not all who wander are lost.”

Some of the people walking around at night will actually know where a party at IU is! Walking around campus IN A GROUP, do not walk around at night alone, can be a great way to meet people. You’re all in the same boat! Enjoy the chaos!

5. Use Cyberdust to find parties!

Thank you Mr. Cuban! For those of you who don’t know Mark Cuban (yes, billionaire Mark Cuban) is an alum and he created a wonderful app called Cyberdust. Download the app and start following @iuparties this will send you addresses that are having parties off campus. This app is very similar to Snapchat, but your pictures or messages will not be saved on their servers. Yes, Snapchat saves your pictures. Therefore Cyberdust can have a lot of uses!

Overall, enjoy the awkwardness of being a freshman! It’ll be over before you know it and you will miss it. Make as many friends as you can and everything will fall into place. Cheers!
