10 Hidden Gems On Netflix To Watch With Your Best Friend

One of the best things to do on a night reserved for relaxing is to have a “Netflix with your best friend” movie night. You gather up all of your favorite snacks, put your favorite pajamas and facemasks on, snuggle up with all the comfiest pillows and blankets, and find all the hidden gems that Netflix has to offer. There’s just something about watching great Netflix finds with one of the people who means the most to you. Time to grab the popcorn, laugh, and maybe even cry, because here are 10 of the best shows and movies on Netflix to watch with your best friend.

1. Let It Snow (2019)

Topping the list is one of my favorite Netflix movies, Let It Snow, and that’s not just because one of my favorite actors is in it, it’s just that good. Although it is a Christmas movie, you can watch it at any time of the year. A rom-com that tells five different stories that eventually come together in the end, Let It Snow shows all the ups and downs of friendships and love during the Christmas season. You and your best friend can guess who will end up with who and how everyone ends up knowing each other by the final scene at the “Waffle Town.” Also, there’s great music. Who doesn’t love a rom-com with great music?

2. Firefly Lane (2021)

One of Netflix’s newest releases, Firefly Lane, tells the story of best friends Tully and Kate from the day they met when they were 14 to their adult lives 30 years later.  The 10 episode series highlights all aspects of life: love, career, home-life, loss, marriage, and motherhood. Tully and Kate face their fair share of challenges throughout their friendship that may be similar to some of the things you and your best friend may have to face or might have already faced, making this the perfect “Netflix with your best friend” find. Both laughs will be had and tears will be shed, I can guarantee it.

3. Julie and the Phantoms (2020)

Yes, this show might have been created for children, but I can assure you that it is amazing no matter what age you are. My best friend and I are in our late 20s and we watch Julie and the Phantoms quite often. We have to use Netflix’s streaming party feature for our “Netflix with your best friend” dates because we live in two different states. It’s full of great music, excellent comedic one-liners, and a ghost band from the 90s. Living in 2020, Julie struggles to reconnect with the music that ties her to her late mother until she plays a cd and brings back to life the 90s band, Sunset Curve. The three ghost boys help Julie rediscover her voice and create a friendship stronger than Caleb’s evil jolts (you’ll know what I’m talking about if you watch it). You and your bestie will be dancing and singing along to the catchy tunes from the show before you finish the season’s nine episodes.

4. Grace and Frankie (2015)

Grace and Frankie are proof that best friendships can emerge from the weirdest and most unlikely of circumstances. Developing a friendship in their 70s when their husbands confess that they are in love with one another and want to divorce the ladies and get married, Grace and Frankie become two women who decide to navigate the change in their relationships with one another. I have never laughed harder at a show and I think it is one of Netflix’s treasures that you have to enjoy with your best friend. Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin are amazing together and I want my best friend and I to be just like them when we grow up.

5. Someone Great (2019)

Someone Great is the definition of a Netflix gem that you need to watch with your best friend. I watched it with mine and we laughed, cried, and sang during the whole thing. In Someone Great, you meet Jenny, Erin, and Blair, three best friends going through life in New York City. In the midst of Jenny preparing to leave New York for a brand new job and ending her relationship of nice years, the ladies embark on one more memorable day together. Like with all friendships the girls face challenges throughout the day, but nothing that can ultimately tear them apart for real. This is the kind of movie you want to watch with your own Erin and Blair.

6. After (2019)

Every Netflix night with your best friend needs to include a cheesy story about a teenage girl who falls in love with a bad boy – the bad boy we all wish would eventually change to be the perfect boy for the sweet, innocent girl. Well, After is that movie. Based on a popular Wattpad story, After follows the beginning of sweet Tessa and brooding bad boy Hardin’s intimate college relationship. This is a perfect Netflix with your best friend find because, let’s be honest, we all kinda wish we could meet a Hardin. He’s the kind of guy we all talk about at our bestie sleepovers.

7. Can’t Hardly Wait (1998)

This one is a classic if you’ve heard of it. This movie screams “90s high school outcast gets the hot girl” and it’s an unexpected perfect find when you’re watching Netflix with your best friend. On the last day of school, an entire graduating class attends a house party and every school clique and cliché is represented. Does the nerdy guy get the hot girl he’s been pining for since freshman year? Does the angry jock finally get what he deserves? Do the friends since kindergarten finally become a little more? Find out with your bestie as you watch and remember all the high school drama you might have endured together.

8. American Assassin (2017)

Maybe you and your best friend would rather watch something that’s full of action and gunfight rather than a cheesy romantic comedy. We all have our preferences. If that’s more your speed, I would recommend American Assassin. Mitch Rapp joins an elite group of assassins when his girlfriend is killed during a terrorist attack while on vacation. He trains so that he can find the group of men who took the person he loved most before they continue to threaten the world with more violence. You and your bestie will be on the edge of your seats as you dive into this one starring the handsomely rugged Dylan O’Brien.

9. Before I Fall (2017)

I also know that sometimes you just want to watch a mystery that gets you thinking and trying to predict what’s going to happen by the end of it. I also know it’s better to watch those movies with your best friend so that you have someone to discuss and try to put the pieces together with. Well, Before I Fall will definitely get both of your wheels turning. When Samantha gets into an accident, she begins to live the same day over and over. Throughout the movie, she needs to figure out what she must do or change in order to stop the repetition of the day. Add this one to your “Netflix with your best friend” movie date to ensure that you and your bestie uncover all of Samantha’s secrets and figure out what she will do to save her life or maybe even the life of someone else.

10. Hell Fest (2018)

How about something on the scary side? If you feel like throwing in a horror movie into your Netflix with your best friend movie marathon then I’d recommend Hell Fest. A B+ at best, but still creepy enough to keep you entertained, Hell Fest follows a group of friends who attend a Halloween-themed amusement park on a night when a serial killer decides to torment the visitors. With just the right amount of gore, this movie is perfect to watch with your horror-obsessed bestie.
