8 Great Ways To Divide Chores Among Roommates

Having ways to divide chores is so important when you have roommates. If you lived on your own, you would have to do everything by yourself. The tricky thing about chores and roommates, though, is dividing the household duties evenly so that one person doesn’t end up doing more work than the others. We’ve compiled a list of some great ways to divide chores among roommates and we hope they help you out!

1. Chore Chart

This one is a go-to idea for a lot of people. Make a chart and put it somewhere for everyone to see. Once a roommate completes a chore, they can check off that they did it, so the other roommates know that the chore was completed. If a roommate doesn’t do the chore they are assigned to, send them a friendly text reminding them to do so.

2. Chore Wheel

A chore wheel is fun because you can rotate it or spin it however you like and adds a little bit of playfulness to doing boring chores. If you choose to spin the wheel, you’ll be surprised at which chores you get assigned to do, which can be a good or a bad thing, but nevertheless it will add a bit of excitement to your life.

3. Pick your favorite chores to do

If evenly dividing and alternating chores between roommates doesn’t work for you, you can always pick your favorite chores to do and offer to do them all the time. For instance, if vacuuming and dishes don’t bother you, take responsibility for those chores and you’re good to go.

4. Use a wall calendar

Rather than using a chore chart, you can always use a wall calendar to write down when someone is due to perform their chore duty. This way it reminds each roommate what they need to get done and by when, so it keeps everyone on track.

5. Alternate monthly

One easy way to divide chores is to alternate who does them each month. One month you could be responsible for always taking out the trash and the next month you could be on dishes duty. This way if you tire of a certain chore, you get at least a month off from it.

6. HomeSlice app

The mobile app “HomeSlice” is a way to divide chores and bills among roommates. If technology is something that works well among you and your roommates, this may be the best route to go.

7. Assign specific areas to each roommate

Another great way to divide chores among roommates is to assign specific areas of the house, dorm or apartment to each roommate. For instance, one month you are in charge of cleaning the kitchen and the next month, the bathroom. Or you could just be in charge of cleaning the kitchen throughout your time living in that location and choose to never alternate. It’s up to you and your roommates.

8. Split up who buys cleaning supplies

Cleaning supplies need to be replenished once in a while. It’s only fair to divide up who buys them each time they run out. Create some sort of chart or list on your phone to remember who last bought trash bags, so you know who’s turn it is to buy them.
