7 Easy Plants To Take Care Of When You Can’t Grow Plants

Plants are good to have, but they can be very difficult to keep in your house, especially if you don’t have a lot of time to take care of them. These are some of the easiest plants to take care of based on how much care they require. Most of these plants only need water and sunlight, which makes them a nice addition to your room.

The colorful plants usually need warmth and sunlight, so if you find other plants you want to keep, just remember that fact. Most plants also shouldn’t be watered every single day because it interferes with how the plants grow. Most plants should be watered twice a week, at the most. All plants should be kept away from pets and small children. Most plants aren’t harmful, but they still shouldn’t be eaten, especially if the plant has a sap of some sort that makes it sticky to touch. Enjoy these easy-to-grow plants!

1. Aloe (Aloe Vera)

Aloe vera is used to moisturize your skin and to heal minor cuts and ease sunburn. It is a succulent plant, which means it can survive for long periods of time in poor conditions. It doesn’t require a lot of things so you can care for them pretty easily in your room.

Aloe vera doesn’t need a lot of water, so it’s okay if you forget to water it every once in a while. It prefers bright and indirect sunlight, especially in cooler temperatures. It will grow for years in the same container. You can use the leaves for your own use, but you can only use less than a third of them or you will kill the plant.

2. Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema commutated)

These plants have variegated leaves, which means the leaves are different colors. This makes it prettier to look at when the plant is in your window. These plants can adapt to almost any condition, which makes them really good plants to have if you are forgetful.

The Chinese evergreen plants do not like drafts or long periods of time with under 60-degree temperatures. They prefer low or indirect sunlight, so they don’t need to be in a window or anything. The soil can stay dry for a few days before you rewater it, which makes it better if you forget to water plants. 

3. Christmas Cactus (Zygocactus)

This Christmas cactus produces red or pink flowers in early winter. This can be done by keeping it in the dark for 12 hours a day, starting in the middle of October. Or you could let it sit in cold temperatures (around 50 degrees) starting in November.

This plant does the best when you ignore it. You can keep it in low light, but you’ll get brighter colored flowers if it sits in the sunlight. This plant does require a little bit of pruning, though, cutting away the dead leaves so the flowers stay bright and colorful. This is an easy way to add color to your room.

4. Dumb Cane (Dieffenbachia)

These plants can be slightly harmful to humans and animals. It seeps out a sticky sap that can cause irritants on your skin or a temporary inability to speak if you ingest it. This plant also has variegated leaves, which makes it pretty to have in your room.

Dumb cane likes the warmer temperatures, so it is better to keep it away from windows and drafts. It can be a relatively easy plant to grow because it only requires water, and not a lot of it. Keep it away from pets and small children, just so the sap doesn’t bother them. It likes the sun but not direct sunlight.

5. Lucky Bamboo (Dracaena sandersl)

Bamboo plants are grown in containers until they have big roots, then they like to be planted in soil. You can train the plant to bend and twist, which can make the plant look pretty. The top of the plant has a few leaves and some have flowers.

They do not require a lot of water, and they would prefer to dry out completely between waterings. If the bamboo starts to wilt, it will usually pop back to life after you water it again. They like a lot of light, so putting it near a window is your best bet. They can survive in low light, but grow better in bright lights.

6. Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)

These plants have white flowers that grow from them, too. They are the most striking feature of the plants. The white flowers are thin leaf-like structures called spathes. The spathe starts out as a bright white but turns yellow or green when it gets older.

The peace lily prefers to be in warm conditions. But they will survive in normal room temperatures if it is not kept near the window or in rooms that are kept colder for longer periods of time. They prefer a lot of light, but they will live for longer periods in indirect sunlight. They make a nice addition to any room they are in.

7. Prayer Plant (Maranta)

This plant is a little weird to take care of. Instead of watering the plant, you need to wash off the leaves every once in a while. The colorful leaves can attract pests, so washing the leaves will keep the pests away. Make sure to catch any bugs before it becomes a problem.

You will have the best luck if you put the plants in the sunlight, in a consistently warm area of your house. But they are not picky about their living conditions. The plant keeps its color if it stays in a bright area that has a lot of warmth. The colors will still be there in darker areas, but they will be dulled a little.
