Best 8 Cities For Weekend Breaks

It’s Wednesday. It’s only halfway through the week but that means there’s only two more days to go before the weekend. Feel you have earned a well-deserved weekend break after a tough week at work? If you’re looking to make the most of your weekend before returning back to a job you hate (or you just really don’t like), why not look at going somewhere for the weekend? Take a look at our list of best 8 cities for weekend breaks!

1. London, UK

London is a great city to visit for the weekend; there’s so much to see and explore. A bustling city with a chilled vibe, there is always something for everyone.

Take to the iconic London Eye to get an iconic view of the city or maybe you prefer visiting Madame Tussauds and getting a selfie with celebrities? There are plenty of shops where you can shop ’til you drop and great places to grab a bite to eat if you’re feeling peckish.

Getting around London is also no fuss as you can easily pay by contactless or get the infamous Oyster Card which covered all, if not most forms of public transport!

2. Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Amsterdam made it onto our list of best 8 cities for weekend breaks due to its many scenic canals flowing through the city, world-class museums and gorgeous tulips (if you’re lucky enough to see them in season).

Packed with history and interesting museums, the Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank House are must-sees. Or if you are more of a beer fan, the Heineken Experience will probably be more suited for you.

With many people riding bikes throughout this city, why not get on board and hire a bike yourself to explore the city? It’s a great way to discover attractions and places at your own pace without the hassle of being trapped on busy public transport.

3. Prague, Czech Republic

Prague has become a favourite for many people when it comes to city breaks. If you want a jam-packed, fun-filled weekend, Prague is the place to go.

When visiting Prague, you can’t leave out walking on Charles Bridge or visiting Prague Castle. There is plenty of history in this city to explore and if you have time (or you are looking to get out of the city), trips to the spa town of Karlovy Vary or Český Krumlov are a must.

4. Copenhagen, Denmark

A chilled Scandinavian city, Copenhagen is a great place to go for weekend breaks. Denmark’s capital, has the colourful Nyhavn canal and harbour and many historical attractions.

To fully explore the city, canal tours are popular and are perfect for exploring many attractions at once. Like the UK, Denmark also has a royal family – why not visit the Amalienborg Palace or the Rosenborg Castle surrounded by gardens and home to the crown jewels?

If you feel like you want to let out your inner child, the famous Tivoli Gardens is an amusement park where you can go crazy on rides. But beware, if you’re going to visit Copenhagen, it might end up burning a hole in your pocket.

5. New York, USA

The Big Apple is always a good place to go for a weekend break. A very busy city but it has great city vibes.

Grab a bite to eat at Shake Shack and visit the Empire State Building to get an amazing bird’s eye view of the city. There’s no way you can visit New York without checking out the Statue of Liberty. Time Square is always bustling with loads of people but this popular city destination is all about being in the atmosphere.

Rome is famed for it’s history and pretty architecture. A cosmopolitan city with plenty of art and culture, there are many attractions to visit in your weekend break or if you would prefer to take it easy, why not go shopping (Italian leather?) or roam around the many markets dotted around.

Rome is of course home to the Pope so a trip to the Vatican City is a must. Other attractions include the Colosseum, Vatican city and Trevi Fountain.

7. Dublin, Ireland

The capital of Ireland, Dublin is probably not a city that comes to mind when choosing a city to visit for the weekend.

If you are looking for more of a laidback weekend break, Dublin is a great choice. If you love beer (in particular Guinness), the Guinness Storehouse might be for you – a great brewery experience where you can find out more about the history of the famous beer and try a few samples.

Ireland also holds a lot of heritage; Dublin Castle and the many museums are worth visiting if you want to learn more about the history and culture.

8. Barcelona, Spain

Spain. An already popular destination for Brits for its sunny weather and close proximity, it’s also a good place to escape for the weekend. A city known for its art and architecture, the famous artist Antoni Gaudi has many landmarks around the city to explore.

The La Sagrada Familia and Park Guell are just a couple of examples of Gaudi’s beautiful work. If you are an avid football fan, a trip to the Camp Nou football stadium home to FC Barcelona might already be on your list of places to visit in Barcelona. Not to mention if you want to just sit back and relax with a glass of sangria in your hand.
