The 12 Best Romantic Comedies For A Night In

Stuck inside and already worn out the Notebook? Here are twelve romantic comedies that will either make you laugh your butt off or cry your eyes out.

For a girl who doesn’t like watching many romantic comedies in her spare time, these are the ones I would highly recommend if you are in the mood to watch them or if you want to laugh. These romantic comedy movies can be easily found on Netflix or Hulu. If you don’t have either, you could always rent movies from RedBox. If you are tired of watching the Notebook over and over again, here are some romantic comedies that will make you laugh.

1. Sierra Burgess is a Loser (Netflix Original)

This is a new movie I stumbled upon on Netflix. It recently came out and to be honest I didn’t think I’d love it so much. It is about a high school senior Sierra Burgess, the smart, funny, and underdog main character, who gets texts from the pretty boy jock, Jamey, by accident when mean girl Veronica gave Jamey Sierra’s number saying it was hers. This movie will make you laugh with Seirra’s intelligent wit. This movie will hit you in places you didn’t think it would. This movie isn’t just a romantic comedy, but a movie about the journey to self love and acceptance with Sierra’s journey to finally loving her curves and loving the fact that she doesn’t look like girls like Veronica. It also has the actress who played Barb in Stranger Things and Ethel in Riverdale. This is one of the best romantic comedies.

2. 500 Days of Summer

This movie is an old classic that I watched with my sister when I was in middle school. Most of the scenes went over my head because I never understood back then what it was like to be broken up with. Now, re watching it, it hits me like a ton of bricks to my gut. This movie can be disorienting because it bounces from past when the main character met and dated a woman named Summer to the present when the relationship was over. If you like baby Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon Levitt you’ll love 500 Days of Summer.

3. Scott Pilgrim vs the World

If you like comic books turned into movies, you’ll love this movie. It is the perfect movie to watch when you are sad and really need to laugh your ass off. It tells the story of Scott Pilgrim who has to battle his love interest’s seven evil exes to be with her. This romantic comedy has hysterical one liners and a kickass soundtrack. I’ve watched this movie many times.

4. Love, Simon

This romantic comedy is one of my all time favorites. I remember I saw this movie in theaters with my mom and one of my best friends Brit and we cried our eyes out. It’s a beautiful movie about a teenager, Simon, who goes on this journey coming to terms with his sexuality while trying to figure out the identity of the guy he’s been secretly emailing. This movie is funny, modern, and an important romantic comedy for the LGBT community. The world needs more movies telling stories about the LGBT community.

5. Princess Diaries

This movie is a classic. If you haven’t seen this movie at least once in your life, you need to right away. It follows the story of a young woman finding out she’s a princess of a place called Ginovia. Baby Anne Hathaway is Princess of Ginovia. This romantic comedy is also a coming of age movie about a woman finally being okay with herself and knowing what she is worth. It is worth watching.

6. The Cinderella Story movies

This romantic comedy has been redone so many times it is not even funny. However, I’m still faithful to the original with Hilary Duff in it where she has a secret love affair on instant messenger  (IM) with the most popular jock in high school. However, the popular jock does not know the identity of who he is chatting with. There are other versions of this romantic comedy such as the one that stars Selena Gomez, and the one that stars Lucy Hale. The one that stars Selena Gomez is on Netflix.

7. The Prince and Me

This romantic comedy is one of my secret favorite romantic comedies. It tells the story of a senior in college bumping into the Prince of Denmark not knowing he is a prince. I love this movie because it wasn’t love at first sight. The prince had to work to get this girl to even consider him as a friend let alone a romantic partner. The main character is strong and independent and not like other women characters in popular romantic comedies.

8. 40 Year Old Virgin

This one is such a classic that it’s self explanatory. This was Steve Carell before he was Michael Scott in the Office. It tells the hilarious story of a forty year old virgin and his quest to finally have sex with a woman. If you want to roll on the floor laugh, this movie is the one for you.  It is more of a comedy than a romantic comedy, but it still falls under the romantic comedy category.

9. 10 Things I Hate about You

This romantic comedy I stumbled upon while watching TV. People say that it is a modern version of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew. The movie follows strong and independent Bianca who is very outspoken from her high school peers. She is very well known to the point that her English teacher rolls his eyes whenever Bianca raises her hand. But everything changes when a handsome mysterious young man makes numerous attempts to ask her out, and Bianca is skeptical. It is a hilarious movie that in times can be dated with the references and how it gives off an early 2000’s vibe. But, it’s a timeless classic that will always make me laugh.

10. He’s Just Not into You

This romantic comedy is an old classic. It tells many different stories of many different characters. One story follows a woman who has trouble with dating guys who break her heart because they aren’t into her. Her guy best friend had enough of his best girl friends getting upset over guys to the point that he decided to help her out by giving her advice on how to tell if the guys aren’t into her. All the different character stories are somehow connected. Everyone can get something out of this timeless classic. Fair warning: it’s old enough that the characters had landline phones that had the swirly cord.

11. Deadpool

Surprised that this movie is on the list? Well, if you really think about it Deadpool is a movie about a guy who gets super powers and tries to hunt down the men who kidnapped his beloved girlfriend. This is also a kickass movie with foul mouth humor, violence, and Ryan Reynolds naked and breaking the fourth wall every other second. It is a great romantic comedy that your guy friends/significant other won’t cringe while watching with you.

12. Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Lastly, this movie is for anyone who has been dumped and runs into their ex everywhere they go. If you need a good laugh and a movie that is filled with sex and the guy who played Marshall in How I Met your Mother then this movie is definitely for you. It follows a guy who just got dumped by his famous girlfriend and his friends constantly told him to go on a vacation to clear his head. However, the minute he steps into the hotel on vacation he runs into his famous ex girlfriend with her new good looking boyfriend. This movie is a classic romantic comedy that is made by the people who made 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up. This is one of the best romantic comedies.

If you love romantic comedies and didn’t see your favorite among this list, please let me know in the comments. What is your favorite romantic comedy? What romantic comedy are you excited to see in the theaters this year?
