Movies That Are So Bad, They’re Good

Everyone knows that there are good movies and there are bad movies. Sometimes though, a movie can be so bad that it’s actually good. There are only a handful of films that fit the awesomely bad mold. Here are a couple of movies that were so bad they ended up being enjoyable.

1. Trollhunter

Trollhunter is a 2010 thriller from Norway. It is a mockumentary about a group of film students who are trying to capture giant trolls that roam the countryside on film. The trolls have been covered up by the government so little is known about them. The film students run into a rugged troll hunter named Hans who agrees to help them if they stay out of his way.

The plot of the film is pretty generic but Trollhunter has a certain charm to it that keeps the audience interested. A movie about giant trolls that terrorize the countryside that have been covered up by the government is so stupid that it becomes badass.

The film is awesomely bad. The only way to kill the trolls is by shining a bright light on them so they turn to stone. The trolls are absolutely ridiculous. They have giant noses that can smell Christian blood and have faces that look like a shop owner in a bad Japanese video game. Due to the giant size of these trolls, it is hard to believe no one has ever seen them. The film crew also has to soak themselves in urine so the trolls don’t smell them. Everything in Trollhunter is absurd but somehow works. It is a fun movie that will both scare you and make you laugh.

2. Plan 9 From Outer Space

This 1959 sci-fi film is directed by the legendary Ed Wood. Ed Wood is known for being one of the worst film directors of all time. He would rarely reshoot scenes in his films regardless if something went wrong or not. Plan 9 From Outer Space is his best worst film. The movie is full of horrible special effects and some of the worst acting you will ever see. It is an absolute masterpiece.

The story follows the basic alien invasion plotline. A group of Martians attack earth in order to put their evil plan 9 into effect. The aliens resurrect the dead in order to kill off the human race so they can take over the world.

The spaceships in Plan 9 From Outer Space look like pizza pans or hub caps hanging from a piece of string. You can actually see the string attached to the ships. You can also see the boom mic and shadows of the film crew in certain shots. There is even a part where it switches from daytime to nighttime 3 or 4 times in a matter of minutes.  The movie is downright funny due to the fact it is so bad. It is nearly impossible not to laugh at how terrible the film is. Plan 9 From Outer Space is a must-see for anyone who enjoys cheesy sci-fi movies.

3. Dolemite

Dolemite is a staple in the blaxploitation film genre. Blaxploitation is a film genre that came out in the early 70s and focused on urban storylines with African American actors. Movies like Cleopatra Jones and Shaft would be labeled blaxploitation.

Dolemite is about a pimp named Dolemite that was set up by his rival Willie Green and wrongly imprisoned for drug and gun charges. Dolemite gets out of prison and seeks vengeance on Willie Green for putting him in prison. He gets a group of his girls together (who are also kung fu experts) and gets his revenge on Willie Green.

Dolemite is a movie that doesn’t take itself to seriously. A film about a pimp and his kung fu expert prostitutes should never be very serious. The movie stars Rudy Ray More who brings a great level of comedy to the movie. It is full of one-liners and flat out ridiculous situations. The film was very successful when it was released and has many sequels which are just as great. Dolemite is a great film just to put on when you just want to relax and half a laugh.

4. Troll 2

Troll 2 is what some people call “The Plan 9 From Outer Space of this generation.” As stated before, Plan 9 From Outer Space is one of the best worst movies ever made. It is full of cheesy acting and special effects. Troll 2 is just like that but steps it up a notch.

The film is about a family who decides to take a vacation in a small town. Little does the family know that the small town is full of vegetarian trolls who want to turn them into plants so they can eat them. The movie is even worse than it sounds.

The acting in Troll 2 makes some of the actors from Plan 9 From Outer Space look like Marlon Brando. The trolls in Troll 2 look more like goblins than anything. It is so horrendous that you won’t be able to look away.

Troll 2 has become an icon of bad cinema. There was even a documentary made about the film that explains what all went wrong during the movie’s production. Apparently, the director spoke very little English and the actors would have no idea what he was saying. The movie is supposed to be a horror movie but is so bad it becomes a comedy (much like Plan 9).  Troll 2 has a big cult following as well and still plays frequently in independent theaters every year. If you want to see the worst film of the last 30 years check out Troll 2. You will be surprised by how much you enjoy this steaming pile of cinema.
