Outrageously Fun Outfits To Wear This Summer

If you are looking for some fun outfits this summer that are more adventurous and creative, take a look at these ideas. The D.I.Y accessories and alternative uses of different pieces might inspire you to try something new to spice up your favourite outfits from last summer.

1. Overall Shorts

Overalls are such fun outfits to wear year round and they spare the wearer the pain of being constricted around the waist (a problem caused by most pants). However, nobody and no article of clothing is perfect. Overalls are a huge pain in the ass (or bladder) in the Winter if you are wearing a sweater over the overalls and need to go pee on a train. In the Summer however, you are less likely to wear a sweater on top of your overalls and are therefore freed from the wrath of shoulder straps being stuck under your sweater when should you have to urinate in a train bathroom. Better yet, the Summer weather brings about the opportunity to wear overall shorts and is there an article of clothing that screams “fun outfit” louder than overall shorts? Maybe corduroy overall shorts.

2. Fabric & Ribbon Scraps

You may have many of these lying around at home if you just look around. If not, it is easy to find these scraps in fabric and craft stores. If you are wearing a long, shapeless dress, it might be fun to wrap a long piece of ribbon several times around your waist. If you find a long piece of fabric, you can do the same depending on the width. If it is too wide, fold it over a few times and then wrap it the same way as a belt.

Alternatively, you can tie these scraps in your hair in big bows or in a knot with long trailing tails. Some hairstyles you can start with include: buns, pigtails, high ponytails, plaits, or just wear it loose (straight or in big bouncy curls)! Adding a brightly coloured fabric or ribbon will take your fun outfits to the next level.

3. Big Unfinished Cloth

If you are a very lucky duck and you find a fabric scrap that is big enough to wrap around your shoulders, you can try out one of these styles. If it is a big square, rectangle, or triangle, you will be able to tie it around your neck/shoulders like a superhero cape. This will signal to everyone around you that you are out to do good with your superpowers so remember not to do anything evil when you are wearing this big unfinished cloth.

If your home isn’t a goldmine for big fabric scraps, relish this opportunity to pay a visit to a fabric store. The selection in my local one is filled to the brim with florals and patterns. You only need to buy about a metre of the fabric you choose. Many of them are light and delightfully soft as well making them perfect for summer. Steer clear of fabrics that are thick because they will be harder to tie into a knot. At sale prices, these fabrics are considerably less expensive than getting an average to bad quality shawl from a store in the mall. Best of all, the cloth you choose can be used for other purposes in the future without wasting the craftsmanship of, say, finished edges. Imagine how amazing frayed edges would look on a bright red floral cloth against bleached denim.

4. Shapeless Dresses

This is my absolute favourite silhouette when it comes to cutting. I am referring to dresses in any material that have a straight up-and-down shape, or, no shape. You can take full advantage of the Summer weather with these dresses because when you skip around you can feel the breeze flow all around everywhere!

If you want a more streamlined shape to the dress, use one of the fabric scraps or ribbons to wrap around your waist. It will still be breezy just not AS breezy. A really great bonus that comes with these dresses is that you can put your stuffed animal pet in the front with its arms and head sticking out. It is like a built-in baby carrier — perfect for going through airport security hands-free.

5. Flowy Painted Skirts

Maxi skirts have been a Summer fun outfits staple for years but you can make this extra fun by painting on one! Buy some fabric paints and spruce up an old flowy skirt that is made with natural fibres. Follow the instructions on the paint bottle — you may have to iron it when the paint dries. With a bit of crafty work, you can wear a skirt this Summer with paintings of your favourite food, album covers, or animals painted on it.

If you are needing a simpler design to print, you can even pull a Pollock and drip the paint across the skirt. Decide if you prefer the patterns to be vertical or horizontal and make paint splatters with wrist flicks in the appropriate direction. Alternatively, you can paint polka dots, flowers, or any other shape that you are confident in repeating. Remember to space them out according to the effect you wish to achieve.

Minimalism can be so simple and refreshing but having some fun with silly combinations and brave prints may be equally refreshing. If the ideas excite you, don’t be shy and give it a try! Summer is the perfect time to try out these fun outfits.
