15 Area Rugs Perfect For Your Dorm

Area rugs are great for brightening up a room, and a soft thick rug can provide warmth and comfort. They can also reduce the sound of your walking, which is great for dorms without carpet. Here are 15 rugs perfect for your dorm.

1. Tassel

Dorm room area rugs like this one are always a good choice. The tassels give the dorm a relaxed and laidback feel. This is a good area rug to use if your going for a boho theme. But I don’t recommend this rug to students with a cat or dog, because they will mess with the tassels and tear up the rug.

2. Sheepskin

Sheepskin dorm room area rugs are great for students who have a farmhouse or rustic theme. This will create a nice focal point for your dorm. You can also splay the rug across your desk chair to use as a cushion and make the seat feel warmer.

3. Geometric

Geometric dorm room area rugs are a great choice for students with a mid-century modern theme. Mid-Century Modern themes use bold colors, so a bold rug like this one that will stand out would look good in the dorm.

4. Vintage

Vintage dorm room area rugs are a good choice for anyone, but they’re especially good for students with a boho theme. Vintage rugs have the same appeal as distressed jeans; they both look like they have a history. Each tear and faded area looks like it has a story to, and that makes them interesting.

5. Round

Round dorm room area rugs will make your room look bigger since it is not covering all of the floor. You’ll want to make your dorm feel as big as you can make it because they are usually very small. This is a good rug choice, especially for those with roommates because it can help the room feel less stuffy.

6. Jute

Jute dorm room area rugs are great for pet owners. They have minimal shedding, and can stand up to scratches and stains. Jute rugs are also easy to clean, durable, and biodegradable. These rugs are really pretty and never go out of style. I have one in my room and I love it.

7. Persian

Persian dorm room area rugs like this one have some benefits traditional rugs don’t. Persian rugs are made from naturally sourced fabric and dye, and are less flammable than contemporary synthetic fabric rugs. Persian rugs are often seen as an investment  because of the painstaking work that went into making it.

8. Tufted

Tufted dorm room area rugs are very comfortable to walk on. But don’t put them in the washing machine because they are held together with a water based adhesive, and it will fall apart. While hand-woven rugs are higher in quality, tufted rugs can mimic them at a lower cost, but won’t last as long.

9. Shag

Shag area rugs are the most comfortable rugs I’ve ever used. If you want to take a really good nap, let your shag rug warm up in the sun for a bit, then lay down on it. If you’re stressed out a lot, then I highly recommend you get this rug. Walking or laying on a shag rug can be comforting, so it may help relieve some of your stress.

10. Ombré

Ombré area rugs are a great choice for decorating your dorm room. The light to dark shades on the rug will make your dorm more appealing. You can get it in one color or multicolored. The shading of ombré rugs look soft, so it may help make your room feel more inviting.

11. Floral

Floral area rugs are easy to match in dorm rooms because dorm room furniture is usually neutral colored. Now don’t go and make everything in your dorm floral, because then you’ll be leaning more towards tacky. Instead, let the rug be the focal point in your room and match everything else in color instead of pattern.

12. Green

Green dorm room area rugs are a good choice for students because it is the color of balance and harmony, and every college student could use some of that in their life. Green has such a wide range of hues, so it can match well with almost anything. Using a green rug can instantly make a room feel more clean and refreshing.

13. Trellis

The trellis rug is a dorm room classic. The New York Times dubbed it ‘the rug’ in 2021 because everyone has one. Trellis rugs are based off of Moroccan Berber rugs, and can be bought at any store that sells rugs. It’s extremely popular and comes in a wide variety of colors making it easy to match with any theme. The geometric patterns of the rug are a great addition to any modern or contemporary style.

14. Marble

Another great dorm room area rug is a marble rug. They can make any room look classy,  and they’re easy to match because gray and white goes well with almost any color. Marble rugs come in a variety of colors. You can choose a rug with a bold marble design or one that is more subtle. Bold marble patterns go great with modern and contemporary styled dorms because the bold ones are more artsy. A subtle marble pattern would go good with a simpler style, like farmhouse or boho.

15. Moss

Area rugs like this one are perfect for students who are using earthy colors to decorate their dorm room. These rugs are fun and different, and look super comfy to lay on. This isn’t usually the first choice students go for when decorating their dorm, so you’ll be unique. A moss rug would look even better in your dorm room if you have lots of plants, making it a great choice if you want to bring more nature into your dorm. If you like moss rugs, then you’ll love moss bath mats. Moss bath mats use real moss, so they absorb water quicker than traditional bath mats and allow you to dry your feet easier. These mats are soft and feel great under your feet. With a moss rug and a moss bath mat, your nature theme will be complete.
