10 Signs You’re Ready For Thanksgiving Break

Sometimes the fall semester seems to drag on, but at least Thanksgiving break is always at the end of the tunnel! Here are 10 signs you're ready for it.

Let the countdown begin, it’s almost time for that much needed break from fall semester. The last couple of months have been a such a whirlwind; you’ve lost track of time and BAM it’s already November. However, Thanksgiving break couldn’t come soon enough. If you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms, it’s probably a good sign that you are more than ready to make the trek home for the long weekend.

1. You miss your family.

Even if you and your roommates have started feeling like your own little family, nothing is the same as coming home to your real family. What’s better than a long hug form your mom and dad once you walk in the door? And even though you and your siblings may have quarreled when you lived at home, you have to admit you probably miss them too!

2. You miss real food.

After a couple months of college, you have learned one thing: dining hall food sucks. No matter how creative you try to get, or how much of a salad-bar-master you have become, you crave homemade meals. If the thought of Thanksgiving dinner triggers some drool – you are definitely ready for Thanksgiving break. And maybe if you are lucky you can smuggle some leftovers back to school with you.

3. Wardrobe choices are limited.

The first month of college you were determined to be a responsible adult and stay on top of doing your laundry, but that ship has sailed. Your dirty clothes hamper is overflowing, taking over your dorm room, and your outfit choices are limited to old t-shirts and jeans with a stain on them. This is a true sign that you are ready for Thanksgiving break where you can haul home all those dirty clothes and restore your wardrobe back to its full glory.

4. You miss your bed.

No matter how many mattress pads you have stacked high onto your extra long twin (I have a grand total of 3), nothing compares to your bed back home. The comfort of your old blankets and being back in your bedroom can’t be matched. And most of all you are looking forward to sleeping in a bed where your feet don’t hang of the end.

5. You are out of snacks.

When you moved into the dorms, you were stocked with so many snacks you believed you would never have to grocery shop again. But, to your disbelief, the many midnight study sessions and movie nights have left you with nothing to munch on. One good thing about going home is becoming reacquainted with your parent’s snack stash. It’s like being a little kid again, walking through the grocery store.

6. Your brain is on overload.

Even with all that preparing you did before college, it is still extremely overwhelming these first few months of the new semester. The classes are harder and the homework load is much heavier. Not to mention living in a new place surrounded by new people can be a lot to take in. If your brain feels like it’s about to combust, this is definitely a sign you are ready to head back for Thanksgiving break for a little R&R.

7. You miss your high school friends.

Even though you may have made tons of new friends at school, nothing can compare to your friends back at home. The phrase, “absence makes the heart grow fonder,” is all too true. Thanksgiving break is a time that almost everybody comes home from miles away. This is a great chance for you all to catch up on life events and how college is treating you. And what better way to catch up with all your girl friends than Black Friday shopping!?

8. Communal bathrooms are getting on your nerves.

Sharing a bathroom with fourteen other people is not all it cracks up to be. Having to carry your shower caddy back and forth is surprisingly annoying. Going home means no more fighting for hot water, no more finding other girls’ hair in the shower drain, and most importantly it means no more wearing flip flops while you shower!

9. You are craving other scenery.

Every day you open your blinds in your dorm room to find…you are staring into another person’s dorm room. One thing you miss most is the scenery at your house. If your school is far away from home you might have even begun to question what home looks like anymore. Whether you live on the beach or the mountains, once you drive into your hometown you will be reminded, “there’s no place like home.”

10. You miss your pets more than anything.

Every time you see someone walking a dog through campus, or every time you see a cute cat video, you tear up a little bit. Sometimes you may have even asked your parents if you could talk to your pet on the phone. If this is true (particularly the last part) than you are definitely ready for Thanksgiving break. There is nothing like having quality cuddle time with your pet after months of being pet-less.
