Now wine isn’t the easiest thing to learn about, with the many different types of grapes, regions and the rituals of sniffing and swirling; so here are some basic facts about wine to get you started on the bandwagon.
1. You should always hold your white wine glass by its stem, not the bowl.
This increases the temperature and can ruin the taste. No one wants a warm glass of wine! Red wine is supposed to be served room temperature so being held by the bowl can actually help it.
2. Red wine has actually been shown to reduce stress.
This is because it slows down the production of adrenaline. A glass of red wine can equal up to one hour of exercising. Now that’s an exercise I can get down with.
3. Drinking wine can actually improve your sex drive.
Studies show that certain wine can actually improve your libido, with evidence showing that two glasses of wine increase the estrogen released. Now your boyfriend can’t say no to buying you that second bottle of wine.
4. There are actually people in the world who are afraid of wine.
It’s called oenophobia. Let’s raise our glasses to those unfortunate people.
5. Wines tend to be named by either the grape they are made from or the region they’re grown.
Wines such as Chardonnay or the Sauvignon blanc are named after the grape and wines named after the region are those such as the Chablis or the Bordeaux wine. Confusing at first, but drink enough wine and you’ll grasp it eventually. Or drink so much you don’t care.
6. Wine can actually improve the taste of your food.
The alcohol helps enhance the flavours of the ingredients used. If that’s not an excuse to have a glass of wine with dinner, I don’t know what is.
