Toxic TV Couples That People Love

Let’s be honest, toxic TV couples can drive us crazy, but they keep us interested in the show. No matter how toxic a pair can be, we oftentimes find ourselves still routing for them. I myself admit that I definitely find myself rooting for these TV couples even though I know I shouldn’t be. Here are some toxic TV couples that we can all say are our guilty pleasure.

1. Chuck and Blair

Chuck and Blair from gossip girl is probably one of my favorite toxic TV couple. However, their relationship is a constant game. There wasn’t one part of it that was healthy. Blair pretty much bent over backwards for Chuck constantly, while he was being a mediocre boyfriend at best. They cheated on each other, played mind games, and overall just weren’t good for each other. However even though everyone knew this, people still rooted. In season three, Chuck says ““So the next time you forget you’re Blair Waldorf, remember I’m Chuck Bass and I love you.” Most people would think this is sweet, but it isn’t. You’re important because I love you. I define you. That’s what that quote, endlessly romanticized, is really saying. Chuck and Blair’s relationship is toxic from the get-go. He is emotionally abusive from the get-go. There are multiple scenes in this show that would be the breaking point for most people, but this isn’t the case for these two. In the end, they end up getting married and they look happier than ever.

2. Damon and Elena

Damon and Elena’s relationship starts off bad, in the beginning of the second season. The relationship between Damon and Elena throughout the course of the show has been a complicated one that, through trial and error, has grown to be a relationship of mutual respect and even love. After Damon was deceived by Katherine, into believing he had actually kissed Elena, he was very hurt when Elena stated that she would never have kissed him back. Later, Damon went to Elena’s house and tried to convince her that she was wrong about her feelings for him. This is another relationship that has been toxic from the start. Like Chuck and Blair, it was a lot of mind games and manipulation. An example of the manipulation is that Damon constantly made decisions for Elana. Damon disregarded Elena’s choices continuously throughout The Vampire Diaries and made decisions on her behalf that ensured her safety. This juxtaposes his younger brother Stefan’s more considerate nature, as Stefan always encouraged Elena’s autonomy

3. Ross and Rachel

We all cheered when Rachel got off the plane, however you don’t want a relationship like these two. One of the reasons that they are a toxic couple is because they would constantly rehash old arguments. You can’t talk about Ross and Rachel without mentioning the whole “we were on a break” fiasco. Even years after the incident happened, they continued to bring it up. In a healthy relationship, you should resolve your fights, and then keep them in the past. Another big reason is Ross is a cheater. Even if you take Ross’ side with the “we were on a break” situation, he’s still a cheater. After all, he kissed Rachel while he was in a relationship with another woman. He even said Rachel’s name on his wedding day with Emily. If the pair really wanted to be together, they’d break off their other relationships in order to start a real, mature relationship instead of resorting to cheating.

4. Beck and Jade

Even though this is a kid show, Beck and Jade were extremely toxic. This relationship was borderline abusive, and everyone just thought it was funny. Re-watching this show when it came out on Netflix last year was a real eye opener to their relationship. All Jade did was yell at beck, and she was extremely jealous. Beck also knew that he was good looking and oftentimes let other girls flirt with him. It’s almost concerning that children watching this type of relationship go down think that it’s funny. I can say from personal experience that I would have never thought this relationship was bad when I was watching as a child. Even when this show I wasn’t super young, but I still wouldn’t have guessed that this isn’t how a relationship is supposed to be.  The episode where Beck brakes up with jade because he’s so fed up with her, Jade realizes that she screwed up. She works with tori to get Beck back and in the end it works. However, by the end of the series the two are broken up officially.

5. Kourtney and Scott

Kourtney and Scott are the only real life couple on this list. However, after years and years fans of the Kardashian and Jenner clan still want them to end up together. They have had so many ups and downs, such as Scott cheating having problems with drugs and alcohol that took huge tools on their relationship. Even after all of this, they still have the uttermost love and respect for one another. They share three children together, but they are more than just co parents, you can tell they have a genuine friendship and connection with one another. This is the one couple on the list that I can say that I definitely root for. Even though Scott has done some messed up things in the past, he has moved on from those struggles’ incidents and has transformed his life for the better. Despite the fact that they have been broken up for a few years now, Kourtney has admitted that she wants to have another kid with Scott, and now she’s saying he’s her soulmate. Honestly, I believe they are soulmates too.

We constantly find ourselves rooting for these television couples. Toxic couples keep the show going. We always find ourselves loving to hate them and hating to love them. Weather we want to admit it or not, they do keep audiences interested and watching the show.
