Thoughtful Mother’s Day Cards You Can Make Yourself

Let’s be honest, traditional Mother’s Day cards, or any cards, really, that can be bought from the store are just so impersonal. Conceptually, these cards will leave it to the professionals to put into words what you simply cannot. In reality, they often just come across as uninspiring last-minute mementos from your trip to the pharmacy. Picking up a sappy Hallmark card and going “That sounds like me” just isn’t going to cut it.

Your mother is the reason you’re here today. There is no replacing her, and you need to make sure she feels irreplaceable. Where a store-bought card fails in demonstrating your love, a homemade card might just succeed. If it’s really the thought that counts, then why not show her just how thoughtful you are with a creation of your own? Here are a few suggestions to help you express your gratitude to the marvelous matriarch in your life.

Mother’s Day Heart Fan Card

It’s easy to just say “I love you” to your mom. When she hears those words, she may know it’s true, but not fully feel the weight of it. That’s where this card comes in. Telling her why you love her aspires far beyond the average Mother’s Day sentiment and will make her feel special. I mean, think about it. If you only hear “I love you” but never hear any specific reasons, then that phrase can just feel like an empty obligation rather than a genuine expression of love. Plus this card is very cute.

DIY Nail Polish Mother’s Day Card

Who said Mother’s Day cards can’t also be gifts? This one is way less personal than the last one, but it’s definitely more fun. If she’s into nail polish, this can be the perfect way to present part of your gift to her. Why not combine the art of gift-giving and the art of card making? This card comes with a printable template, and all you have to do is hot glue the nail polish to it. Although admittedly, the phrase “You always polish up so nicely” is a little odd, so you might want to get creative with that part.

Mother’s Day Wheel Card

This one is similar to the first option, but with a guided template to make things a bit easier for you. It comes with four phrases for your mom to cycle through, but if you really want that personal touch it comes with a blank option as well. It’s just a fun way to make her Mother’s Day just a bit more entertaining.

“I Love You This Much” Card

Now, this is a highly specific suggestion, as this card works best if it’s presented as a young child’s card they made for their mother. Indeed, if a grown adult made this card for their mom, it would come across as pretty strange. But if it’s framed as if it is coming from a tiny child who is clearly not old enough to make something like this, it suddenly becomes super cute. Mother’s Day cards don’t always have to be from you, exactly.

Personalized Mother’s Day Scratch Card

This might just be my favorite idea, as it combines the expression of love with the rush of gambling! Who doesn’t love a lotto scratcher? Mother’s Day cards can be exciting and interactive too! The only thing that would take this idea to the next level would be to make it scratch-and-sniff. Imagine your mom’s surprise when she not only uncovers your thoughtful personalized message, but her senses are greeted by the smell of daffodils or something. Or if you’re big on gag gifts, it could smell like a wet fart or something. It’s just an idea, though.

Mother’s Day Accordion Floral Card

Accordions are an underrated instrument, and this idea lets your mother unfurl some wonderful memories in the most adorable fashion. What you really want in Mother’s Day cards is an idea that will look like it took a long time, but actually didn’t, and that’s what this one will do for you. Is that dishonest? Are we tricking your mom into feeling loved?

Teacup Card

Who doesn’t love a good cup of tea? Sometimes Mother’s Day cards can be practical, and this is an exceptionally cute way to treat your mom to a nice hot cup of tea. Once you get the cup itself nailed down, you can get as creative as you want with the rest of the design. Maybe come up with a nice tea-related pun, like “I’ll never leaf you” or something. Alright, probably not that one.

Brag Book

Alright, this one’s arguably not even a card at all, but I think it’s close enough. What do mothers seemingly like to do more than anything else in the world? Brag about their kids. This one says “Boast away!” If you’re concerned that it’s not enough of a card, you can always add some personalized messages to it. Make it even easier for mom to brag.

Mom, I Love You Pop Up Cards

This one is super straight-forward yet super effective. They’re beautiful and eye-catching yet simple to make. You don’t always need to overthink your Mother’s Day cards, and this idea is perfectly simple.

Mother’s Day Wine Wraps

We’re ending this list with a bang for sure! Cards are great, but sometimes alcohol is just better. Get mom wine-drunk in the cutest and most personal way possible and maybe she’ll start spilling secrets. Why do you have that dent on the back of your head? Who was Uncle Terry? It’s time to find out with this wonderful idea. Who says Mother’s Day cards can’t get you hydrated?

I know I ended what should have been a sentimental collection of ideas for Mother’s Day cards with some asinine jokes, but I just couldn’t help myself. Anyway, if any of these ideas caught your eye, let us know! Perhaps more importantly, let your mother know just how much she means to you.
