10 Things I Wish I Knew Before University Of Miami Orientation

Going to college can be intimidating, and you always wish you knew more going in. These are the things I wish I knew before University of Miami orientation.

Going off to college is an exciting, yet nerve wracking experience. Especially going to a big University like UM, you might not know exactly what to expect. Everyone has to go through orientation to get a feel for the campus, meet new people, and learn about what’s expected of you as a student. Some people take orientation a little more seriously than others, and I’ve compiled a list of a couple things I wish I knew before going to University of Miami orientation.

1. Although it’s suggested, you don’t have to go to the hypnotist show or the first day of events.

2. You don’t need your family there for all the events; most people just get dropped off.

3. The first day, where they throw you all on the intramural field for the FIRST socializer,  will be awkward.

4. By Saturday, almost no one goes to the featured speakings, or the things in the SAC, because it’s all a repeat of what you already heard.

5. Canesthon is the most helpful and overwhelmingly important event to go to at orientation.

6. Try not being generic and robotic when you have to repeat your name, major, and city for the hundredth time.

7. On Friday, go out and explore Miami, but be safe and don’t get lost.

8. Prepare yourself for the crazy adventures that lie ahead, and a lot of learning.

9. The vending machines in Hetcht and Stanford will probably be empty the first week because of hangry or hungover students, so be prepared.

10. Learn what time is best to use the laundry room before everyone starts using it daily and weekly.

These are 10 things I wish I knew before going to University of Miami orientation. Keep these in mind when you go! Can you think of anything else? Share in the comments!
