10 Reasons To Be Happy That You’re Single In College

It is a common sight on college campuses across the country. Two people are walking hand-in-hand or arm-and-arm across campus, stopping every five seconds to kiss each other. It can be tempting to wish for this if you are single, but there are reasons why being single in college can actually be a good thing.

1. Time to focus on yourself

When you are in a relationship, you are probably hanging out with each other at least once a week, depending on your circumstances. This eats up at the time that you could be using for yourself. Instead, use this time to pamper yourself with some leisure reading or extra sleeping time.

2. An opportunity to meet different people

Being in a relationship confines you to go on dates with only one person. When you are single, you have an opportunity to go on dates with other people and play the field. Also, you have time to network with people in your field and make new friends on campus. These relationships are more important.

3. Save money that you would spend on someone else

If you are in a relationship, you will have to spend money on another person. Whether it is a date night or a birthday gift, this is money that you can put elsewhere if you are single. Invest it or put it into savings. Better yet, put it towards paying off your student loans to help you lower payments later. Use it to join professional organizations or student activities and conferences.

4. Experience things on your own

Sure, doing things with another person is fun, but doing things by yourself is an entirely different experience. It opens you up to a whole new world. You can dive into the activity or event without distraction or needing to make sure the other person is happy. Doing things by yourself allows you the opportunity to do what makes you happy.

5. Gain a sense of independence

Gaining independence is a great way to better yourself. Experiencing things by yourself allows you to learn what to do in certain situations without having to rely on someone else’s advice or leading. This allows you an opportunity to make mistakes, which is crucial to growing as a person and is what college is all about.

6. Lowers the risk of dealing with a breakup

Dealing with a breakup during any time of your life is rough, but it is even tougher when it is compounded by the stress of school, activities, and a job and/or internship. Some breakups are obvious and you can easily read the signs that it is coming, but other times it is out of the blue. Being single obviously eliminates the chance that you will experience a breakup.

7. You have no one to answer to

When you are in a relationship, you often have to justify why you act a certain way have to accommodate how the other person feels about what is going on. You are bound to another person. Being single allows you to be independent and you do not have to answer to anyone but yourself for how you act. You have the freedom to be you without judgment.

8. You can join various organizations

You have time to invest in things that interest you. Many campus organizations and events, especially at Temple, take place at night. Those in relationships use evenings to go out and spend time together, but if you are single in college, you have the freedom to use this time as you choose. Make the most of this opportunity.

9. Your career will never leave you

A relationship may end, but your career will never leave you if you work hard enough. Use the time that you are not focusing on a relationship to focus on your career. Take a job or internship. Go to networking events on campus or in your city. Make the most of your time and you will build a solid career that will last you a lifetime.

10. Being single gives you one less person to worry about

If you are in a relationship, you are probably worried about them and what they are doing. When you love someone, you naturally worry about them and what they are up to in their lives. However, being single in college allows you to not have worry about someone else. You only have to focus on you and your family and friends.
