How To Beat The Heat In Austin This Summer

If you’re lucky enough to have avoided completely melting yet, then you’re probably looking for a couple of ways to stay cool this summer. Whether you’re an East Coast transplant like myself or an Austin native, chances are you’re reaching your boiling point. When the temperature starts rising to 100 degrees, everyone is in need of an escape. Here’s a couple of ways to beat the heat in Austin this summer – without raising your AC bill.

Barton Springs Pool

Barton Springs is a three-acre pool situation within Zilker Park. It’s a natural pool filled by underground springs. The average temperature stays between 68 – 70 degrees throughout the summer, making it the perfect place to cool off. Not to mention, it’s completely free of charge.

Kayak Rentals

Enjoy an outing on Lady Bird Lake via kayak, canoe, or paddleboard. Hourly rentals are available through Zilker Park Boat Rentals seven days a week – if the weather permits. You can bring along some friends, or try to achieve some relaxation on your own. It’s also a fun way to stay active, without completely overheating.

Amy’s Ice Cream

Amy’s practically dominates Austin’s ice cream situation, and for good reason. They’re famous for their Mexican vanilla flavor – but with non-dairy, and vegan options, there’s something for everyone. It’s a great place to cool down on a hot night because let’s be honest, what would summer be without ice cream?

Inner Space Cavern

Inner Space Cavern is a prehistoric karst cave located about 40 minutes outside of Austin, in Georgetown, TX. Since heat rises, the dark cavern stays about 70 degrees year round. It’s probably the only adventure you can embark on, without the risk of sunburn.

Mexic-Arte Museum

The Mexic-Arte Museum is a great place to escape the sun – plus it’s a lot more interesting than walking around a mall. You can enjoy a curation of traditional, or contemporary Mexican, and Latino art. This downtown museum serves culturally enriching fine art, with a steady supply of AC.

Wet Deck

The Wet Deck is an outdoor pool, bar, and cabana area situated on the fourth floor of the W Austin. You can take in downtown views and a poolside cocktail with a $10 day pass. For the happiest of hours, the W offers complimentary access to the Wet Deck every weekday after 5pm.

NLand Surf Park

You probably associate Austin with cowboys, more than you do surfers. As a result, you might be surprised to discover that Texas is home to the country’s largest man-made surf park. NLand is located in Del Valle, about 10 minutes from the airport. The lagoon offers group sessions, and lessons for beginners or experts. It’s a place where you can live out all your Blue Crush fantasies, and have a truly unique experience in Austin.

Waterloo Adventures

Waterloo is a floating waterpark located on Lake Travis. If you ever watched the television show Wipe Out, and thought, “I could do that” – then here’s your chance. The challenge course is complete with a 25-foot trampoline, climbing walls, and a 12-foot free fall. If you’re less of a thrill seeker, then retreat to the lounge chairs, and saddle floats for a more peaceful experience.

Whether you prefer ice cream, cocktails, or adventures, (maybe a combination of the three) there are tons of ways to escape the rising temperatures this summer. Though geographically speaking, Austin is a landlocked city, there’s water everywhere. You can choose to relax at Barton Springs, tackle six-foot waves at NLand, or avoid non air-conditioned areas altogether. However you chose to conquer the heat is up to you, just stay cool!
