The greatest part of attending Northeastern University is having the vibrant city of Boston right at your fingertips, but living on a college student’s budget can be limiting. Here are some things to do around Northeastern University that are fun and free of cost!
1. Refresh your knowledge of American history by walking along The Freedom Trail.
Okay so if you’re a fifth year you’d probably be rolling your eyes at this one, but it is a must-do for any newbies to Boston! Each location along The Freedom Trail offers a chance to see American history, my personal favorite being Paul Revere’s house in the North End. The Freedom trail is an overall great way to get to know the city.
2. Get fit at the Pru!
The Prudential center is offering free fitness classes in the South Garden from top Under Armor trainers through the month September. So if you’re tired of running on the treadmill at Marino every day, give this a try!
3. Picnic and play lawn games at the Boston Common or along the Charles River.
It’s great to escape to some great green spaces when you live in the middle of a bustling city. Play any lawn game imaginable at the Boston Common or along the stunning Charles River, better do this one soon while the weather is nice!
4. Feel cultured by listening to some Monday Night Jazz.
Unwind on a Monday night in Boylston Plaza. Lay a blanket down and listen to jazz musicians from the nearby Berklee College of Music.
5. Go art gallery hopping on Newbury Street.
Enjoy walking the quaint street and hop into some eclectic art galleries while you’re at it such as Newbury fine arts, Galerie d’Orsay, and the Martin Lawrence Gallery. These places are always receiving new pieces to admire for free!
6. Attend Mass Poetry Unplugged.
If you are looking to further explore the more artistic side of the city, the Prudential Center is putting on Poetry nights on Tuesdays in Boylston Plaza. It’s an awesome opportunity to get outside and chill before classes are in full swing.
7. Go for a hike at the Blue Hills Reservation.
Who knew that you could explore the great outdoors so close to the city? This reservation is about 45 minutes from Northeastern and offers plenty of trails and scenic views if you are looking to escape city-life for a day.
8. Explore Faneuil Hall Marketplace.
Faneuil Hall is a great place to go visit, especially when vendors are giving out free food samples! The architecture itself is rich in history and you’re bound to catch some free entertainment while you’re there, the marketplace tends to be a favorite spot for all types of street performers.
9. Get studious in the Boston Public Library.
The perfect place to head to if you’re feeling tired of endless hours in Snell library. It’s historic walls will make you feel like a true academic.
10. Catch a free movie at the Hatch Shell or the Prudential Center’s South Garden.
Both the Hatch Shell and the Prudential Center are hosting free outdoor movie screenings through the summer. The perfect alternative to watching Netflix in in your dorm. Get some fresh air instead!
