10 Decor Tips For Creating The Perfect Statement Wall

Personally, I’m obsessed with cultivating my room decor. A place doesn’t feel totally mine until I’ve put out all the decorations I’ve gathered over the years to fully express my style along the expanse of my room. Your room is meant to be a safe, personal space to rejuvenate, so it should reflect what you love and what makes you feel comfortable. A statement wall can be a great addition to any room decor, especially as it can often consist of many small components drawing from different aspects of your interests or personality. Here are 10 decor tips for making the perfect statement wall of your own.

1. Take time to find things you like

Statement walls can take a lot of work and, as the name implies, they end up being a huge part of your room decor. Because of this, it’s worth taking the time to find a series of pieces you really love, rather than ones you like well enough, but really picked just to take up space. Of course, you can pick a piece just because you like how it looks. Not everything has to have deeper meanings. But make sure you really want it to play a role in your decor tips before purchasing.

2. Plan before you hang

Again, this wall is going to be a big part of your room, taking up an entire wall, so you want to put in the work necessary beforehand to create a near perfect product. Once you’ve found the majority of what you want the wall to be decorated with, map out and visualize where you want each item to go. This way you won’t run into any unexpected hiccups or find out you don’t like certain pieces next to each other until it’s a little too late. Of course, you can always undo things, but then you’re only creating more work for yourself.

3. Make it cohesive

Your statement wall most likely is going to consist of a variety of pieces, but you don’t want them to look totally random against each other when it all comes together. When you’re choosing pieces, keep an eye out for cohesiveness. Maybe some of pictures have similar images or a few are pictures with your friends with vibing aesthetics. These are just examples. The components can be as different or varying as you prefer, but try to look at them as a whole the best you can to see if they really go together. Some decorators go for total cohesion by using the same frame and setting for every photo or print. It’s all up to you.

4. Incorporate a variety of styles and forms

So yeah, variety. While I do advise some elements of cohesion, it can be fun for not every item to be exactly the same. This could mean incorporating different kinds of frames–circular or maybe made from a more worn wood. Or you could break outside of a traditional frame totally and use pieces on canvas or cloth. A hung mirror can match almost anything easily and help to break up any monotony.

5. Choose things not difficult to hang

Hanging pieces can be really difficult, especially when you’re in a temporary place where you don’t want to leave marks on the wall and don’t want to put in a ton of work, only to pack everything back up in a few months. Because of this, you want to keep in mind how easy it will be to hang something before deciding to incorporate it in your statement wall. Tacks or command strips are usually the best bets, but sometimes walls are too thick for tacks and pieces can be too heavy for either tool. While command strips come in a variety of strengths and there are always other alternative methods, your ability to hang a piece is definitely something to consider when putting together your statement wall.

6. Avoid clashing colors

Just like you want your pieces to be cohesive content-wise, you want them to go together without clashing in color, as well. Things don’t need to be all match-y match-y, but a subtle color scheme can really bring the wall together. At the very least, you don’t want 5 black frames and 1 brown one, sticking out like a sore thumb. Have an idea of what colors you typically like to have in your room, and look for pieces that somehow play into that theme. This is one of the best decor tips to not having an overcrowded wall!

7. Don’t overcrowd with quotes

Quotes are great. It’s awesome to be surrounded by words that comfort or inspire you. However, having a lot of different quotes or words can clash and become overwhelming. More than one or two word-related pieces will clutter your statement wall and make it harder for the quotes you really love to stand out on their own, as they’ll be overshadowed by the other ones around them. In my opinion, pick one, or maximum two, quotes or phrases you most want to have on your wall and stick with those.

8. Go for one big piece

If you’re not interested in taking the time to put together a statement wall made of many smaller components, shoot for something big. Bigger pieces can likely result in bigger projects, but they have many cute options for a statement wall as well. You can cover the whole wall in a pattern or hang a larger print, picture, or ornament. This may be the option for those less interested in planning, and more interested in getting their statement wall finalized in place.

9. Get creative with what you choose

Anything you want to hang on the wall, you technically can hang on the wall. Feel free to get creative with your choices. Have a scarf you really like the pattern of? Want to hang your hats in a decorative fashion? It’s all possible. Some decorators even incorporate plants into the design of their statement wall. There are tons of cool, unexpected options to choose from! Getting creative is definitely one of the best decor tips!

10. Leave room for additions

You’re inevitably going to find other prints or posters you wish you would have incorporated, even after you’ve completed the wall. To account for this, it’s a good idea to leave space for your wall to still grow and spread out. That way you’ll be able to hang up new additions in the future, should you find any. A great part of your statement wall is that it can always be a work in progress, just like you. This is one of the best decor tips to listen too!
