5 Reasons The University Of North Carolina At Chapel Hill Was The School For Me

For those of you still trying to decide which school is the best fit for you, don’t stress! We’ve all been there, I know I have. Whether you’re in high school or considering transferring, choosing the right school can be one of the toughest decisions you make as a young adult. It’s hard enough to form your own opinion of an institution without the mass of college tour guides, councilors, and recruiters giving you their carefully crafted spiel for their university. For any of you considering a school on the East Coast and looking for the inside scoop, here’s some reasons why I fell in love with University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

1. The Beach and The Mountains

Never could choose between the beach or the mountains? Well don’t fret because at UNC, you don’t have to! University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is located in that rare sweet spot right between the mountains and the beach. It’s about a three-hour drive to either. It’s perfect for a fun university event or a weekend getaway with friends!

2. You’ll Never Lack Intellectual Friends

For us nerds, the idea of being in an environment that encourages academic conversation is exciting. College brings together people itching to discuss the latest political news, religious hot topics, and scholarly theories. No matter your opinions, you’ll always be able to find someone to discuss them with. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is one of 35 colleges within an hour of Chapel Hill, including Duke, NC State, NCCU, Elon and more. If you go to an off-campus event, it’s inevitable to make friends from all sorts of schools and studies!

3. Talk About A Career Booster

Going to college at all will significantly advance your career. Period. But it’s no secret that some schools carry more prestige than others. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is ranked 30 in the 2018 edition National Universities ranking by U.S. News. On top of that, it’s a state school so tuition for in-state students is a fraction of the price compared to other universities.

4. Diversity Is Not An Issue

UNC actively seeks students from all walks of life. Conservative or liberal, queer or straight, religious or apathetic, Black, White, Asian, or Hispanic – you’ll find your people here, and you’ll grow from those who are different from you.

5. No Major? No Problem!

Well not literally, everyone needs a major. But at UNC, it’s okay to come in undecided. It’s understandable that many high school seniors don’t quite know what to dedicate their careers to yet, so choosing a major might not be as easy as they hoped. Some schools require students to declare their major upon application and, for students still exploring their interests, this can be an intimidating or even impossible task. UNC’s structure allows undergraduates to develop their passions and offers nearly a dozen nationally ranked professional schools. Odds are likely, that no matter what you choose, you’ll be at the perfect school to launch your career!

No matter what college you choose, make sure it has aspects that are important to you personally and academically. For me, these were the major reasons UNC-Chapel Hill was a good fit and, now that I’ve been here for a while, they’re why I call this place home.
