1. Movies in the Park
Switch up a classic movie and dinner date this summer by taking advantage of the many free showings in the city’s gorgeous parks. The calendar for this year’s schedule is already available, and it showcases everything from Disney movies to foreign films.
The zoo is a great date for any animal lover out there. There are two in the Minneapolis area, and the Como zoo is open year round, close to campus, and free. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon.
This is the perfect activity for an outdoorsy couple. Minnehaha Falls is gorgeous to visit any time of the year with its frozen waterfall in the winter and its lush green trails in the summer. The Stone Arch Bridge is also a great gorgeous place to take a walk with its view of the Minneapolis skyline. Snap a few pictures and remember the place where it all started!
4. Comedy Show
Try something new and have a few laughs along the way! Acme has free open mic nights on Monday nights that are always entertaining to visit. If you’re feeling ballsy, take a turn on stage and show off for your date.
5. Glide into their Heart
Try ice skating or rollerblading! The Depot Ice Rink is open all winter and it is gorgeous at night. Otherwise, the Roller Garden offers fun rollerblading with an 80s vibe.
6. Visit a Humane Society
Show them your ruff side and cuddle some furry friends at the local humane society. Almost everyone’s an animal lover, and if they aren’t, do you really need that kind of negativity in your life?
The art scene in the twin cities area is popping. There is so much talent all around the city, and there are always new exhibits to see. MIA and Weisman are always free, and the Walker is free Thursday nights and the first Saturday of every month. The science museum also has deals every Friday night, and there are a lot of fun interactive things for you to show off your playful side with.
Revisit some favorite childhood memories by spending a few hours playing mini golf. CanCan Wonderland is designed by artists and features a whirling tornado, waterfall, and mini baseball field for you to golf through. After you’re done, try one of their fantastic shakes from their whimsical parlor.
Minneapolis is one of the most bike friendly cities in the US. NiceRide bikes are available for rent throughout the city and are super convenient. If you’re feeling fancy, pick up a tandem bike and bike around the Lake Calhoun area. Definitely a super sweet date idea!
10. Farmer’s Market
Wander one of the many farmer’s markets hand in hand and enjoy all the delicious food and homemade goods. This is a low stress activity and will really allow you to get to know that special someone.
11. Escape Room Challenge
Put your heads together and try your hand at solving a crazy puzzle. You’ll have to work together and use clues to try and escape the locked room. The larger the group, the easier it’ll be to escape. This is definitely a fun group date idea!
12. Succulent Bar
Get your hands dirty and customize your very own succulent arrangement. Carver Junk Company offers this event a few times a year and you can choose from dozens of cute containers, plants, and fun figurines to add.
Succulent plants are really easy to take care of, so when you say “our love will last as long as this plant,” it won’t be bs.
13. Paddle Boarding or Canoeing
Lake Calhoun is the perfect place to spend a hot summer’s day. The beach is beautiful to lounge about at, and if you’re feeling adventurous, there are rentals for a lot of different water activities as well. If you’re lucky, maybe your date is certified in CPR 😉
Try your hand at winning a huge stuffed animal and living out that romcom life. Even if you don’t succeed, the arcade is still a really fun and exciting date idea. Up-Down in Minneapolis opened not long ago and it has all the old-school classics that you know and love.
