During summer, we all experience problems getting our makeup to stay put and not melt off while we sweat in the heat of the sun. Whether you have dry skin or oily, here are five of my best tips to keep your makeup looking fresh and beautiful all season long. Check out how to use the best makeup for hot humid weather!

  1. Start with good skincare

This is important year-round, but it is especially true during the summer season. Starting with a good skincare base under your makeup will ensure a smoother application process and will keep the product on your skin much longer. And please, PLEASE, do not forget to apply (and re-apply) sunscreen.

  1. Primer, primer, primer!

Primer is a sort of in-between step between your skincare and makeup application. Different ones do different things, but all of them seal in your skincare and prepare your face for the application of makeup products. They create a barrier that allows for the prevention of breakouts and they help make the makeup stay in place for a lot longer.

For oily skin types, use a mattifying one like the MUFE Step 1 Skin Equalizer in the Matte version. Us oily folks produce the glow on our own, therefore subduing the oil is ideal for our skin type.

For normal to combination skin types, use a primer that has physical particles in it to pump up your summer glow. A good example of this is the Becca Backlight Priming Filter. It does little to inject hydration or to prevent oil secretion, but leaves the skin with a beautiful shiny finish that your skin type can handle all day.

For dry skin types, a subtly moisturizing primer is ideal to leave you looking hydrated and glowy this season. Ones like the Too Faced Hangover Rx Primer or Glossier’s Priming Moisturizer are perfect for your skin—they don’t over do it on the grease, but leave your skin plump and perfect for best makeup for hot humid weather tips.

  1. Keep your look minimal

Skipping foundation will not only make your look appear a little more effortless, but it will allow for minimal product breakage occurring on your face throughout the day. Of course, if imperfections are a source of concern for you, by all means apply product to them. I do, however, encourage you to consider application techniques like pin-point concealing to minimize product buildup while maximizing coverage. Own your imperfections, you’ll be grateful when you can wipe the sweat off your brow without your brows and foundation rubbing totally off. Same goes with complex eye looks, skip them if you can! 1. Use waterproof and cream based products

If you do want to do a heavier layer of makeup, using waterproof products will maximize wear time. Whether it’s waterproof eyeliner and mascara, or water-resistant brow pomades and liquid lipsticks, any product that repels water will do the same whether it comes to sweat or taking a dip in the pool. Utilizing cream-based products is a great option as well because they stay malleable over time, so if you sweat some of it off you can just smoosh it back into place and reapply with ease.

  1. Use a good setting spray

No matter your skin type, I recommend finding a setting spray that dries down to a matte finish. Notice, I’m taking setting sprays here, like Urban Decay’s All Nighter Setting Spray—*NOT* hydrating mists. You want something that will make your makeup lock into place. If you have oily and normal skin types, this may be obvious. For dry skin types, though, you want something that’s not going to introduce oils onto your face and cause product break-up. Don’t be afraid of a little matte-ness! You can still pump up the glow with your primer and highlighter for best makeup for hot humid weather.
