9 Tips To Help You Succeed At SJU

Keep reading for these 9 tips to help you succeed at SJU!

1. Use your student discounts.

(Don’t wait until senior year like I did.) You can save a lot of money on tickets to Broadway shows, Regal and AMC theatres, sports games and other special events. Check here for updated info each semester. Also, always check out this site for more discounts!

2. Take advice of our awesome Career Center faculty.

Help is on the way. I’ve received priceless career advice from Cheresa Fewell and Elisa Zervos in the Career Center. They helped me to build my resume, prepare for an interview with an employer through research and offered professional advice. “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” Matthew 7:7.

3. Make sure you learn the importance of time management as soon as possible.

Time after time I waited until the last minute to print something or add something to a Google Slide and ended up late to class. I finally learned to make sure all parts of my assignments were finalized at least 24 hours before they were due. Plus I made it to class on time!

4. Remember to always communicate.

Working in groups with classmates taught me how to express my ideas and accept others in a polite way. By connecting and communicating with my professors I learned essential skills that can affect my future career opportunities, as well as real-world challenges.

5. Study abroad.

During my opportunity to study abroad I was able to show my parents I can travel safely, drink responsibly, spend wisely and communicate frequently. They were proud to see their hard work pay off in another country!

6. Always give 100% of your initial efforts.

I learned to put 100% of my time and energy in what I’m doing the first time, to avoid a second and third time. No matter what, never give up.

7. Set realistic goals…and accomplish them.

I’ve created vision boards to get me through each semester. My collages of dreams were a daily reminder of what I had the power to become.

8. It’s not only about what you know, it’s who you know.

After practicing my elevator speech a million times in Professor Jarmon’s class, I was confident enough to introduce myself to Ronald Ferguson after his Brooks Brothers Wardrobe Seminar presentation. Guess what? I got the internship!

9. Keep in contact with your professors.

Once a Johnnie, Always a Johnnie. Most of my professors are SJU alum and are committed to connecting students through networking opportunities throughout and after the semester. They even suggested I connect with them on Linkedin to keep in touch after graduation.
