Winter everywhere can be brutal, but winter in New York City is in a category of its own. In a city that’s known for its street style, it can be hard to stay both fashionable and warm in the winter. However, if you keep a few things in mind winter can become a little more bearable. This may be one of the most important things you can do to survive winter in New York. When you first hit the streets in the morning the chill will hit you like a ton of bricks. Therefore you’re going to want to be layered from head to toe. Even if that means a hat, two shirts, one sweater, two coats, leggings, jeans, thick socks, boots, gloves and a scarf. Seem extreme? It’s not. Besides, the best thing about layers is that you can remove them when it’s not as cold, (you know like when you’re stuck on the E train and it feels like a sauna down there?) Ew!
Sweaters will become the bulk of your closet. Chunky wool pieces, thinner cable knits and wrap cardigans are the best way to add that extra layer of warmth. They’re also versatile meaning they can carry you from season to season, even once the chill finally begins to wear off.
This is key! First you’re going to want a big enough coat to put over all of your layers. A parka is a great choice to not only accomplish this, but also to keep you warm when snow comes to town. Hats, scarves and gloves will be your best friend when it drops below 30 degrees. There’s nothing worse than when your skin is exposed to the wind and each of these accessories can take care of that. Plus they’re a great way to add some extra style to your outfit.
