12 Ways To Style A Flannel

When the weather starts to cool down, the flannels come out. They are that piece of clothing that almost everybody owns and once you start to see them, you know its fall.

Flannels are not only meant to be comfortable and keep you warm but they also become a major piece of fashion. The nice thing about them is they can be dressed up or down depending on your mood. I remember rocking a flannel freshman year of college and a pair of my flare VS Pink sweat pants. It was such a comfortable look and I felt more put together than just wearing a sweatshirt and sweat pants.

Flannels are that one piece of clothing that everybody wears; kids, men, women, your grandparents, etc. It’s almost impossible to find someone who doesn’t own a flannel. Almost every single store sells them too so they aren’t difficult to find.

Whether you want to find a few new ways to style flannels or just want to gather some fashion inspo, you’ve come to the right place. There are tons of ways to rock a flannel and like I mentioned before, they can be dressed up or down.

This plaid staple can be worn even in the office depending on the dress code. Flannel doesn’t have to mean a grunge 90’s look. It can be taken in the classy direction. And its a style that isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Flannels have been around forever and they are here to stay.

Get your flannels ready and check out these 12 different ways to style them. Trust me, you’re going to be rocking the plaid look in no time.

1. Classic

The classic way to style your flannel is going for more of a grunge look. Throwing on a pair of ripped denim jeans, your favorite oversized flannel over the top and some leather booties can be a quick and easy look. This is perfect for running errands, going to the mall, etc. You can dress it up more by adding a hat or even a pair of stilettos. This is a timeless look. If you want to step up the grunge look even more, pair this outfit with some dark lipstick.

2. Cute with a Twist

If you feel like your outfit isn’t reaching the maximum potential it could, wrap a flannel around your waist. If you’re sporting a white t-shirt with some skinny jeans and sneakers but are craving the color and pattern a flannel could bring, an easy way to fix it is to wrap it around your waist. You don’t necessarily have to even wear the flannel but the pattern will draw attention. It’s an easy way to spice up your plain Jane outfit.

3. Leather

For some reason, leather and flannels go amazing together. If it’s slightly cool out but still warm enough to wear a leather skirt, tuck in a flannel to it and you’re good to go. This look can be paired with either sneakers, booties or over the knee boots depending on what you’re doing. It’s a great way to keep a dressy look more causal. The two are a match made in heaven.

4. Comfy!

Comfy is a great way to be when the weather starts to cool down. And I don’t care what anybody says, sometimes you just want to bum it. Like I said, my go-to in college was yoga pants and a flannel. Since yoga pants have been put on the back burner in the fashion world, pair your oversized flannel with leggings. You could even mismatch patterns if you want but black leggings are classic. Pairing them with fuzzy mules, which are basically slippers you can wear out and about, is another great way to keep it comfortable.

5. Flannel Dresses

Flannel dresses are just down right adorable. If you don’t have one or can’t find one you love in stores, take an oversized mens flannel and button it up completely. Since I’m 5’2, it doesn’t take much to completely cover my body. Wrap a belt around the center and pair with a chunky pair of booties! It’s an easy look and definitely comfortable. Also, you could even pair this look with some tights underneath if the weather is too cold for dresses.

6. Underneath Sweaters

I’ve always associated wearing a button down under a sweater to have a preppy vibe but using a flannel is a great way to keep it more casual. This look is great if you are feeling extra cold that day or just want to add a little bit of pattern to your outfit. You could even dress this up with some dark washes jeans and heels. Or just thrown on a pair of denim shorts if you live in a warmer area.

7. Long Skirts

Long skirts have definitely made there way back into the fashion world and pairing one with a flannel is a great way to keep your outfit more casual. Even wearing a skirt that has a lace or pattern can have a nice contrast with the plaid. Depending on the occasion, you could rock either a lighter flannel or a darker, more classic one. A light flannel with a light skirt will make the look more dressed up while a dark flannel and a light skirt can be a great dress down fit.

8. Flannel over Sweatshirt

Another one of my go-to looks in college. Wearing a flannel over a plain colored sweatshirt is a vibe and look I’m always down for. If you live in a colder climate, this is also another way to keep warm. To dress the look up you could wear it with a pair of denim jeans or leggings if it’s a bum outfit you’re wearing to class. Throwing on a beanie is another way to give off the you just rolled out of bed look without looking completely bummed out.

When the weather starts to cool down but is still nice enough outside to wear a dress, throwing a flannel over the top is an awesome look. It gives off a grunge look but can still be dressed up. 10. Flannel Scarfs

While this isn’t exactly wearing a traditional flannel, plaid scarfs have become increasingly popular. You can buy them almost anywhere like Target or Forever21 but they can keep you warm but also give something to your outfit. If you’re just wear a denim jacket and jeans, throw on a flannel scarf to give a pop of color to your look. Finish it off with a pair of brown boots. This outfit screams fall.

11. Flannel Poncho

Ponchos are back and I am loving it. They are not only so comfortable but they look really put together. Wearing just a plain pair of leggings and a long sleeve can be boring. And if you live in Upstate NY, chances are you’re going to get cold. Throwing on a flannel poncho over your outfit is a great way to dress it up but also keep you warm all day long. It’s a great outfit that you can wear to dinner, out to lunch, to high school football games and more.

12. Trendy

If you want to switch up the classic flannel and jeans look, wear it off the shoulder. Simply unbutton the flannel a little ways down and either drape it completely off both shoulder or just off one. This is an easy way to turn a day look into a night look. Wearing a flannel this way with jeans and a pair of heels can be a really sexy and sultry look.
