10 Ways To Make Your Dorm Room Feel Like Home

Moving into your dorm room can be an exciting but scary experience. Make your new space feel like home with these tips.

1. Framed Photos

Most people will plaster their dorm room with photos they’ve printed out. Instead of doing the typical clustered and blue-tacked photo wall invest in some framed photos. If you think of home, your photos are usually sitting in frames so why should your dorm room be any different? Home goods stores will have a large assortment of frames to choose from so pick some that represent your personal style to feel at home.

2. Plants

Living in a dorm usually means harsh concrete walls and fluorescent lights. Add some life to your room with some easy to care for plants. Large and lush plants like the peace lily are easy to care for and add some much-needed freshness to your dorm room.

3. Gallery Wall

Creating a gallery wall in your dorm room is a way to cover up the ugly walls and to make it fell more like home. Take some frames and knick-knacks that have sentimental value to them and display them for the world to see. Showcasing important photos and memories will help you feel close to home all year long.

4. Lights

Florescent lights are the worst, and they’re pretty inescapable when living in dorms. Invest in as many lights, lamps, and string lights as you can. Having other lighting options means you can use the overhead lights a lot less often. If you’re worried about the lack of outlets to plug these lights into try battery operated alternatives.

5. Throw Pillows

Cozy throw pillows are an easy way to make your dorm room feel homier. Having them on your bed and desk chair is a good way to bring your room together as one. It can be very exciting buying all new accessories for your dorm room but consider bringing one of your favorites from home to your new space. Physically having a piece of your old room in your new one will help make you feel more comfortable in your dorm room.

6. Blankets

There’s no way to go wrong with a throw blanket. Not only do they help with the cold in winter, throw blankets are a way to add a cozy element to your dorm room. Whether there just for decoration, or for when you want to cuddle up and watch a movie in bed, throw blankets make your room feel like home.

7. Bed

Your bed is where you’re going to be spending most of your time in your dorm room, so you need to feel comfortable in it. On top of adding throw pillows and blankets, look into getting an egg topper to help make your bed as comfortable as your one at home.

8. Rug

The generic floor typical in dorm rooms is not one your home would ever have so, cover it up with a small cute rug. Rugs let you bring your personal style into the space as well as add some warmth and comfort.

9. Curtains

The odds of your bedding matching the curtains in a dorm room is basically one in a million, so investing in your own curtains is a must. Be careful not to buy curtains before you’ve seen the room as you might not have the right measurements. In some rooms, windows sit on a ledge so you need shorter curtains or they run on a track so you have to have a specific type. Do your research before buying so you always get the perfect set.

10. Scent

With so many strangers living in such a small space, there are going to be weird smells, especially if you are eating in your room. Most dorms don’t allow candles but that doesn’t mean your room needs to smell bad. Simple room diffusers make a world of a difference and can be found in most
