10 Ways To Decorate Your Dorm Room That Will Stand Out

Upon arrival, dorms aren’t exactly homey. Despite the brick walls and bad furniture, you can make your dorm room stand out with a few easy decorations. Let’s face it, college is stressful and you’ll need a comfortable place to retreat. Here are 10 ways to decorate your dorm room to stand out!

1. Plants

Nothing livens up a room like some greenery. Succulents, cacti, and aloe vera plants are super easy to take care of. Not to mention, those leafy greens can help purify the air quality in your dorm. If you’re too intimidated by becoming a plant mother, then just buy fake ones. You can find super convincing artificial plants for a good price at IKEA or Walmart. Line your desk with succulents, place a fiddle fig in every corner, the possibilities are endless.

2. Mirrors

Dorms aren’t really known for their spaciousness. Universities stick two strangers in a moderately sized box and expect them to get along. Mirrors are a great way to make your space appear larger by giving the illusion of more depth. They also help reflect the minimal light your sole window has to offer. Circular mirrors look great above your desk or headboard – just make sure you place them on a sturdy Command hook.

3. Rugs

Rugs can add a lot of comfort to a room – plus they’ll cover up the awful linoleum flooring. They can help make your dorm feel a little warmer because nobody enjoys stepping out of bed onto a freezing floor. Not a lot of people think of this, so if you decorate your dorm with a rug, you’ll definitely stand out.

4. Extra Lighting

If you’ve ever searched for dorm decor, then you know that string lights have been all the rage. They’re available everywhere and come in a ton of different styles. A warmer tone is calming so it’s perfect for studying or binging Netflix – your choice.

5. Throw Pillows

Decorative pillows are a great way to add color and texture to your dorm. They’re also an easy way to incorporate your own style without breaking the bank. There are so many out there so you can decorate your dorm to your aesthetic.

6. Headboards

A headboard can be a really unique and fancy addition to your dorm room. If you’re a little crafty, there are hundreds of DIY tutorials.

7. Curtains

Curtains are another way to add texture to your dorm. You can also hang the curtains slightly higher than the windows in order to make the ceiling feel taller. If you’re homesick for your old bedroom, decorate your dorm with curtains to create a homey feel.

8. Wall Art

The best way to make your dorm stand out is to add some art along with your personal pictures. It’s a great way to represent your home state, sorority, or personal style. If you want to be unique, decorate your dorm with DIY wall art. You can find free prints online and paint some old frames.

9. Removable Wallpaper

If you’re instantly put off by the prison cell looking bricks in your dorm, then stick on wallpaper might be for you. Removable wallpaper is a great way to make your dorm stand out – without losing your deposit. You can do the entire room, or a single wall if you’re feeling lazy.

10. Shelving

Bed and desk cubbies are a great way to add extra storage to your room. You may be hesitant to bring in more furniture to a small room, but the cubbies can help you stay organized. They’re also a great place to keep textbooks and display pictures.

With a few small adjustments, you can transform your dorm into a Pinterest-worthy space. These decorations can be used to express your personality and create an element of comfort. It’s completely possible to have a jealousy-inducing dorm room without blowing your budget. These decorations will absolutely make your dorm stand out!
