Moving to college after staying home all your life can be a scary thing to undertake. All of a sudden you’re away from your family and in a completely new and alien environment. Your dorm is a lot smaller than your room at home, and there’s nothing there that has that homey, comfortable feel… yet. To get you started on the path to not feeling so homesick, here are 15 ways you can make your dorm room feel like home.
1. Put up pictures of family and friends.
Because the thing you miss most from home isn’t the house, it’s the people in it.
2. Keep things clean.
Your parents probably always kept things pretty clean at home. Maybe if you took the trouble to straighten things up it would remind you of home (and make you appreciate the work).
3. Bring your favorite DVD’s.
Play your favorite TV shows or movies every once in a while, it really helps take your mind off of how new and scary things are.
4. Bring some essential oils.
You probably always had a certain scent that you were used to smelling at home. Whether it was a candle or any other sort of smell-good, bring something to resemble that smell. Scents can be powerful.
5. Put lots of pillows on your bed.
Pillows= comfort. Comfort= home.
6. Decorate the walls.
Put up paintings and other cute decorations all over the place. The more bare your wall is, the more it’ll feel like prison instead of a dorm.
7. Put together a playlist of your favorite songs.
Having a playlist of your favorite songs just running in the background while you’re relaxing, studying, or hanging with friends can be a good way to make things feel like home.
8. Bring trinkets that have sentimental value.
Have some weird objects that remind you of your home or family? Don’t leave them behind!
9. Get a mini-fridge.
At home you can walk over to the fridge and grab something whenever you want to. So, get a mini fridge and you’ll be able to do the same in your dorm!
10. Find a drawer just for your snacks.
Having a snack drawer is what has gotten me through college so far. Whether you’re too lazy to go out and get food or you really just need to stress eat, it’s the perfect solution for everything (the best place for a snack drawer is normally the bottom drawer in your desk). We all had our own snack cabinets at home, which is why this is one of the best ways to make your dorm room feel like home!
11. Put up some mood lighting.
A unique lamp or some string lights can go a long way in making things feel a little more cozy.
12. Get a fuzzy rug.
Because who doesn’t like their feet to always be touching a super soft, fuzzy rug? This is definitely one of the best ways to make your dorm room feel like home!
13. Buy a bean-bag chair.
They are so comfy and probably really bring the nostalgia for you. Plus, they’re really good for fitting into the oddball spaces where you don’t know that anything else can fit.
14. Get some funky curtains.
Not only do they look cool, but they can block out the sun for when you want to sleep in and not have the blinding light waking you up.
15. Invest in a thick mattress pad.
Dorm beds are uncomfortable AF, so definitely invest in a thick, soft mattress pad. Your body will thank you.
