The Ultimate Guide to Kent Sorority Recruitment

Yes, it’s still the middle of summer…but the Kent sorority recruitment link is officially live! You can now sign up for this fall’s sorority recruitment. For freshman, this often brings up feelings of both excitement and anxiety. While the process is overwhelming, recruitment ends up being a fun, rewarding experience. Two years ago, I was in your same position. And hey, I survived and I currently belong to an amazing sisterhood! Keep reading for my ultimate recruitment guide at Kent to save you some stress and help you find your home away from home.

As recruitment week approaches, you will be assigned to a group and a sorority recruitment counselor (SRC).

Your SRC is your guide to recruitment. She can answer any questions and listen to your feelings throughout the process. SRCs disaffiliate from their chapters before and during recruitment, so you won’t know what chapter she is in. This way, she won’t be biased when helping you make your decision.

The recruitment process includes three rounds.

Philanthropy, house tours, and preference.

During these rounds you mix and mingle with members of each sorority and learn about their ideals and traditions. You’ll answer the same questions over and over again: Where are you from? What’s your major? What did you do in high school? Why did you decide to go through recruitment? It’s repetitive, but worth it, as each girl is trying to get to know you. Just think of it as speed dating!

At the end of each day, you will narrow down the chapters you are interested in.

As the rounds go on, the more formal they get, and the amount of chapters you see will decrease until you’re down to 1-3 options. After your final ranking, it’s bid day! You’ll find out which sorority has offered you a bid, which is basically an invitation to join their sorority. After that, you spend the afternoon eating free food and celebrating with your new sisters!

Unfortunately, not every girl will get a bid to the sorority they want.

You may not get an invitation back to your favorite sorority, but trust me, it’s not the end of the world (even if it seems like it at the time). Each chapter offers a fun, unique sisterhood. Give other chapters a chance. You’ll end up exactly where you’re supposed to be!

These are my top three recruitment tips:

1. Wear comfortable shoes.

Yes, you want to look cute and rock the latest pair of heels you’ve bought, but you’ll be standing and talking for hours on end, so remember to be practical. Wear whatever you feel best in, just don’t be this girl below.

2. Keep an open mind.

You may think you know what sorority you want to be in before recruitment even starts, but you should still give other chapters a chance. You may end up liking the sorority you least expect!

3. Be yourself.

As cliché as it is, this is the most important piece of advice to remember. Don’t worry about what the recruiters will think of you! Kent State has a diverse Greek life filled with so many different friendly girls- don’t believe everything you see on TV about bitchy, backstabbing sororities! After all, you’ll want to be in a sorority that accepts you for your real self, not your fake recruitment self- and that’s what sisterhood is all about.
